Designer Lindsey Adelman Has a Way of Lighting Up a Room

This article provides an in-depth look into the world of Lindsey Adelman, a renowned designer known for her innovative lighting fixtures. The centerpiece of her work, the Branching chandelier, is highlighted as a design status symbol that has been continuously evolving since its inception a decade ago. Adelman's design philosophy emphasizes constant innovation, with variations in glass colors, the addition of thorn-like appendages, and alterations to the overall geometry ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. Her commitment to local craftsmanship is evident in her continued collaboration with the same glass artist and machine shop that she started with. Beyond lighting, Adelman has expanded her creative repertoire to include mirrors, candelabra, and even jewelry, with future plans to explore bronze work following a visit to the Polich Tallix foundry in upstate New York. She expresses immense gratitude for the opportunity to engage in creative work daily. The article also delves into the performative aspects of Adelman's artistic endeavors. It describes her studio's playful approach to a photoshoot, outfitting the entire crew in white Tyvek jumpsuits, which reflects a broader theme in her work. Examples of this performative nature include her 2012 International Contemporary Furniture Fair exhibit, where her staff assembled lights live at the Javits Center, and a music video titled “Show Me” produced for a Wright gallery exhibition, featuring members of her studio team as backup dancers. Additionally, for the Collective Design fair, Adelman created a two-channel video installation exploring themes of creation and destruction, embodying her belief that "Things break when you’re having fun. It’s a good sign of life." This philosophy underpins her approach to design and art, embracing the inherent risks and spontaneity in the creative process. Her operational scale is impressive, producing approximately a thousand pieces annually, ranging from the compact two-bulb Agnes Sconce to the expansive Boom Boom Burst. Adelman has recently transformed a storage space in Brooklyn’s Industry City into a new studio and established an outpost in Los Angeles, while her main headquarters remain in NoHo. The article touches on her personal style, characterized by a utilitarian-chic aesthetic, typically involving black jeans or dresses with leather leggings, often paired with a bold Marni necklace. She notes the convenience of having designer friends and shops nearby, allowing her to easily source fashionable pieces. Her practical approach to fashion extends to making her own jewelry, such as rings, illustrating her hands-on design ethos that permeates both her professional and personal life. The piece features a collection of photographs showcasing her designs, her Brooklyn home, and glimpses into her creative process and collaborations. #LindseyAdelman #LightingDesign #ProductDesign #InteriorDesign #ArtisticProcess #BrooklynDesigner #ContemporaryDesign #ChandelierDesign #LindseyAdelman #LightingDesign #ProductDesign #InteriorDesign #ArtisticProcess #BrooklynDesigner #ContemporaryDesign #ChandelierDesign
