So You Want a Green Kitchen—Here’s a Pretty Perfect Example
This article highlights a unique kitchen renovation project led by designer Rebecca Gibbs, who challenged conventional design norms to create a vibrant, color-saturated green kitchen. The core philosophy behind the design was 'function follows form,' encouraging a departure from typical kitchen aesthetics. Instead of a minimalist approach, Gibbs envisioned layers of saturated colors, specifically focusing on various shades of green, to achieve a low-contrast, tone-on-tone look that feels grounded rather than stark.
A significant aspect of the renovation involved the use of emerald-colored tiles extending all the way to the ceiling, a bold choice that sets the kitchen apart. The cabinetry, custom-built by Gibbs's carpenter husband, Lucas, was painted in 'Retreat by Sherwin-Williams,' a gray-green hue intended to act as a neutral backdrop. This intentional color layering contributed to the desired saturated, yet harmonious, atmosphere.
One of the standout features is the backsplash, which draws inspiration from the 1937 home’s Spanish-inspired architecture. Gibbs opted for Fireclay Tile’s star-and-cross pattern, moving away from more common subway or hex tiles. This choice was crucial in maintaining the home's eclectic vibe and traditional Southern design roots. While the tile was a significant splurge, the designer balanced the budget by incorporating more affordable brass hardware throughout the kitchen.
The renovation also introduced innovative design elements beyond color. A continuous oakwood shelf spans an entire wall, incorporating windows without sacrificing storage. This shelf was an engineering challenge, requiring Lucas Gibbs to wrap the wood around a piece of steel for structural integrity, especially where no visible brackets were present. This solution provided both functionality and aesthetic appeal, allowing for open shelving while preserving natural light.
Furthermore, the ceiling was painted a warm blush instead of the traditional white. This decision was made to avoid visual jarring and to complement the earthy tones of the green cabinetry, adding a soft warmth to the space. Even the decorative beams, newly installed, were hand-scraped by Lucas to achieve an aged look, further contributing to the kitchen's unique character. These small, thoughtful tweaks collectively define the kitchen's distinctive style and demonstrate a successful execution of a bold design vision.
