Deck the Halls Like Martha: Our Founder's Holiday Decorations Through the Years

Martha Stewart's holiday decorating style is characterized by a blend of tradition, whimsy, and meticulous attention to detail, transforming her various properties into festive showcases each year. Her approach to holiday decor spans across multiple homes, including her estates in Bedford, New York, and Seal Harbor, Maine, creating unique and enchanting atmospheres for the festive season. At the heart of Martha's holiday decorating are her diverse Christmas trees. For her annual Christmas caroling soirée, she often features a tree adorned with handmade ornaments inspired by music and nature, some crafted from paperclay and springerle cookie molds. In her Bedford estate's tenant house, which is dedicated to young houseguests, she has created woodland-themed trees complete with bears, mushrooms, and other forest motifs. Martha also utilizes faux Christmas trees, such as a tabletop silver tree placed in a galvanized metal tray with artificial snow and deer figurines. Another notable tree in her living room is a woodland-inspired display in a faux bois basin, decorated with owls, polar bears, acorns, pinecones, and various metallic balls. Her "green room" in Bedford features an evergreen tree with silver and green ornaments and tinsel stars, while her "bird room" houses a large green and blue aluminum tree with golden ornaments. In a tribute to her Polish heritage, one tree at her former home, Turkey Hill, was adorned with straw ornaments, eggshell designs, and wheat decorations symbolizing renewal and prosperity, with colors chosen to complement the room's existing decor. Beyond trees, Martha incorporates a variety of other festive elements. Her summer house in Bedford is illuminated with candles and lights during winter, creating a warm glow. For outdoor decorations, she has used giant ribbon-candy-inspired ornaments made from gold and silver-toned flashing, threaded rods, and wooden beads. At Skylands, her summer retreat, a large wreath embellished with natural and gold-dusted pinecones and a gold ribbon bow adorns the porch. Her Bedford farm's old apple tree is decorated with giant kugel balls and white lights, complemented by a mixed-greenery wreath on the corn crib. Martha's holiday decorating also extends to interior details. Mantels and trees in her Seal Harbor home are dressed with pinecone garlands and ornaments, including hand-blown glass fishing buoys and stockings made from ingrain carpet remnants. Personalized equestrian-inspired stockings, created by hammering initials into lambskin, are a unique touch for Christmas morning. Gingerbread houses are a grand tradition, with Martha and her team creating elaborate replicas of estates and entire villages, often illuminated with small lights. She also prepares embroidered jute bags as personalized treats for her barn animals. Table settings are another area where Martha showcases her festive flair. For Christmas Eve dinner at Skylands, she uses Art Deco cranberry-glass stemware, American sterling flatware, Italian 17th-century chairs, and a Venetian-print tablecloth with Victorian-style gold thread trim. Tabletop displays include small holiday gifts beneath Victorian smoke bells and trees adorned with acorn-shaped ornaments and metallic baubles, often accompanied by sugar cookies decorated like gifts for cookie swaps. Whimsical touches include a silver fruit tree at her East Hampton residence, featuring polystyrene fruits wrapped in metallic leaf and tied with silver ribbons. Beeswax candles are carefully clipped to tree branches and lit only when people are present. For outdoor pathways, ivory paper bags printed with her farm motif and weighted with sand serve as luminarias. Glimmering wreaths, such as a gold-painted grapevine wreath with a gold bow, complete the festive look across her properties. Martha's diverse and imaginative holiday decorations consistently create a magical and memorable experience. #MarthaStewart #HolidayDecorations #ChristmasDecor #FestiveHome #SeasonalDecor #GingerbreadHouses #ChristmasTrees #HomeDecorIdeas #MarthaStewart #HolidayDecorations #ChristmasDecor #FestiveHome #SeasonalDecor #GingerbreadHouses #ChristmasTrees #HomeDecorIdeas
