This Prefab Mirrored House Can Be Plopped Almost Anywhere
The article introduces ÖÖD, a design company founded by brothers Andreas and Jaak Tiik, which specializes in producing 200-square-foot prefab mirrored-glass houses. The concept for ÖÖD houses originated during a hiking trip in Estonia, where the brothers, disappointed by the lack of private and appealing accommodations, envisioned a compact, aesthetically pleasing, and easily deployable cabin. Despite lacking formal design training, Jaak's experience in construction and Andreas's background in advertising enabled them to realize their vision. The core feature of these units is their UV-resistant coated glass exterior, which is reflective from the outside, allowing the structure to seamlessly blend into its natural surroundings, while offering clear views from the interior. This design choice draws inspiration from earlier architectural works like Philip Johnson’s glass house and more recent mirrored structures such as Peter Pichler’s Mirror Houses and Bolle Tham and Martin Videgard’s Mirrorcube hotel.
ÖÖD houses are designed for simplicity and ease of installation. Each unit costs $65,000 and is delivered as a single piece, requiring minimal setup—it can be placed directly on secure ground or installed on six concrete posts for added stability, eliminating the need for a traditional foundation. These houses are equipped with an air heat duct for climate control, and plumbing and electricity systems that connect to external grids. The interior comes in a "Nordic Minimalist" style, featuring a queen-size bed with a trundle, a butterfly chair, a shower, a toilet, and a compact kitchen area with a mini-fridge and cooktop. Future plans include an offline grid system for plumbing. The adaptability of the ÖÖD house is highlighted by diverse client requests, such as combining multiple units for a conference hall in Estonia, incorporating a glass ceiling to view the Northern Lights in Finland, and even using surfboards for flooring in Hawaii. The article notes that while the glass appears transparent at night, curtains are provided for privacy. The design emphasizes blending the structure with its environment, creating a unique living experience.
