Petra bathroom collection is made from stain-resistant concrete
Designers Marco Merendi and Diego Vencato collaborated with Italian firm Gypsum to create the Petra collection of bathroom furniture, utilizing a newly developed dirt-resistant concrete. This innovative material makes the furniture suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The collaboration resulted in high-performance concrete, branded Cementoskin, that boasts resistance to various forms of dirt, allowing for delicate molding. The material is further noted for being water-based and eco-friendly.
The Petra collection, designed for the Italian brand Agape, includes a washbasin available in countertop or freestanding versions, a separate countertop surface for the sink, and a shower tray. The freestanding sink features an integrated column for brassware. This collection has been longlisted for the Dezeen Awards 2019 in the Furniture design category, highlighting its innovative design and material application. Other longlisted items in the category include furniture and homeware crafted from marble and volcanic stone, as well as flat-pack furniture made from recycled plastic bottles.
Merendi and Vencato initially proposed a concrete product range to Agape in 2014, but at that time, a suitable cement type for their vision was unavailable. Their subsequent partnership with Emanuele Perego of Gypsum led to the breakthrough with Cementoskin. This material is characterized by being a mixture of cement enriched with carefully selected aggregates, providing high technical and structural performance even in very thin layers.
Inspired by the natural forms of smoothly eroded pebbles, the Petra collection features soft-touch concrete surfaces, enhancing its organic aesthetic. The concrete is dyed with oxides during the mixing process, offering a palette of 12 distinct tones. These include three neutral greys and a variety of greens, blues, and warmer hues, all reminiscent of colors found in nature. This approach allows the furniture to blend seamlessly into diverse environments.
The unique properties of Cementoskin, such as its resistance to staining, chemical corrosion, extreme temperatures, and salt mist, make the Petra collection exceptionally versatile. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, from private residences to public spaces, and can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings. The designers specifically mentioned its potential for use in "large gardens and small terraces," as well as traditional bathroom environments, underscoring its durability and adaptability.
