I Searched Endlessly for a Dining Room Pendant With Personality—Here's What Came Out on Top
The author embarked on a comprehensive search for a dining room pendant light that would complement the existing decor and reflect the vibrant atmosphere of their dinner parties. This quest began nearly three years after moving to Seattle and purchasing a six-foot Alonzo Long Dining Table, which became a focal point for social gatherings. The dining space, although well-used and cherished, lacked a lighting fixture that truly matched its energy and the personal significance of shared meals.
The search process involved extensive online browsing and referencing Pinterest boards for inspiration. The author considered several pendant lights, each with unique characteristics and aesthetic appeals. The Lulu and Georgia Zikri Pendant, with its organic, woven shape, was initially attractive but ultimately deemed too bohemian given the presence of two woven dining chairs already in the room. The Klaylife Petal Pendant, a handmade clay fixture from South Africa, resonated with the author's appreciation for ceramics and intentional craftsmanship, but its high price point made it unfeasible. The TOV Serengeti Outdoor Pendant, crafted from Rayung grass, offered a wild and jungle-like energy. However, the author decided against it, fearing it would overpower the living room's already strong design elements, which included rattan dining chairs and a Mexican abstract painting. The School House Oaxacan Melliza Pendant, with its playful, droopy form, appealed to the author's desire for a whimsical yet grounding piece, but its scale was considered insufficient for the six-foot dining table. Lastly, the Vakker Light Lola Travertine Pendant, featuring the author's favorite material, travertine, was rejected for being too sleek and minimalist, as the goal was to introduce a softer element to balance the room's aesthetic.
After a thorough evaluation of these options, the author ultimately selected the Llot Llov Fran Lamp, specifically the Fran CS Raffia Fringes Lamp. This choice was influenced by a long-saved Pinterest image of a similar raffia piñata pendant found in the YOWIE Hotel in Philadelphia, designed by the Berlin-based studio Llot Llov and handmade by women in Latvia. The chosen beige color of the Fran Lamp harmonizes effectively with the author's terracotta rug, chartreuse velvet couch, and black steel console table, adding a unique and transportive quality to the dining area. The pendant was installed by a professional, and a remote-controlled bulb was added to enhance the dining experience, finally completing the vision for a personalized and inviting dining space.
