Shea McGee’s Most Ambitious Reno to Date Is Only 180 Square Feet
Shea McGee, known for designing large ranch homes and expansive mountainside retreats, faced a unique design challenge when her husband, Syd, surprised her with a vintage Airstream in a dire state. The 180-square-foot interior of the abandoned camper, found in Idaho, required a complete overhaul. Despite the significant size constraint, Shea was determined not to compromise on comfort and style, insisting on features like central AC, a functional kitchen with a boat-grade fridge-freezer, a walk-in shower, and a queen-size bed.
The renovation presented various design obstacles, primarily related to weight and space. Unlike traditional home projects where heavy natural stones and woods are preferred, everything inside the Airstream needed to be lightweight to withstand the vibrations of highway travel. For instance, the flooring, which appears to be vinyl planks, is actually a plastic sheeting with a wood design. This meticulous consideration of materials ensured durability and structural integrity while the camper is in motion.
Maximizing the limited space was a critical aspect of the design. The dining area features a walnut dining table set on a motorized stand that can be lowered to become level with the U-shaped banquette. This innovative design allows the space to transform into an extra-large bed, comfortably accommodating three children. The area beneath the banquette was also utilized for storage, with built-in drawers for clothes, showcasing clever space-saving solutions.
One of Shea’s non-negotiable elements was a marble-tiled walk-in shower in the bathroom. To balance the weight of the stone, given the Airstream's strict weight limitations, compromises were made in other areas, such as the lightweight flooring and plywood cabinetry. A Caesarstone vanity countertop was added on the opposite side of the vehicle to further distribute weight evenly. The design integrated high-end fixtures, including brass light fixtures from Visual Comfort, to elevate the aesthetic.
In the sleeping area, Shea prioritized a queen-size bed over a full-size option, challenging the typical RV layout that often restricts access to one side of the bed. The headboard was custom-made from superthin wood wrapped in foam and securely attached to the trailer's end. The overall design was intended to create a luxurious and comfortable mobile home for the McGee family's outdoor adventures, which typically involve hiking, campfire meals, and s'mores, emphasizing the importance of a good night's rest after an active day.
