The design addresses the challenge of achieving adequate light and ventilation in a high-density residential area. Initially, the owners requested an internal courtyard. However, the architects proposed an alternative solution: a terrace on the first floor. This innovative design allows natural light to penetrate both levels of the house. The terrace is strategically positioned on the opposite side of the main staircase, which further aids in diffusing reflected light from the ceiling down to the ground floor, optimizing natural illumination throughout the living spaces. To enhance functionality and privacy, the open-air terrace is transformed into an extended living area through the incorporation of a series of angled louvers. The exterior of the House in Higashi-Gotanda is distinctly characterized by its galvanized steel cladding.
