Interior Design Trends for 2017

This article explores the anticipated interior design trends for 2017, offering insights into upcoming styles and preferences for homeowners. Nikki James, design studio manager for Ashton Woods, a national home builder, outlines several key directions expected to gain popularity. The article highlights a shift towards incorporating more color into home interiors, moving beyond the predominant light, airy white and gray palettes that have been popular, especially in Florida. While these neutral tones will persist as foundational elements, the introduction of bolder hues is expected, with a particular emphasis on Pantone’s Color of the Year, Greenery. This nature-inspired shade of green is envisioned for use in accents such as upholstery, artwork, pillows, and area rugs, rather than as a primary wall color. Other shades of green are also predicted to feature prominently. The use of color extends to functional elements like subway tile backsplashes and bathroom walls, where light blue and taupe with gray undertones are expected to replace plain white. Sherwin Williams’ Color of the Year, Poised Taupe, is presented as a sophisticated and classic neutral that aligns with these evolving preferences. In kitchen design, two-toned cabinets will continue their appeal, typically featuring lighter upper cabinets and darker base cabinets to maintain a sense of spaciousness. Appliance trends point to the rise of black stainless steel from brands like Whirlpool and KitchenAid. Hardware choices are also undergoing a transformation, with chrome and matte black finishes supplanting oil-rubbed bronze and satin nickel, reflecting a move towards more transitional and modern interior aesthetics. Shaker-style cabinets and clean-lined countertops are expected to retain their popularity due to their simplicity and ease of maintenance. Faux finishes are poised for significant growth, providing budget-friendly and low-maintenance alternatives to natural materials like Carrera marble. Wood-plank tiles, particularly in darker shades with gray undertones and popular 6x24 inch dimensions, are gaining traction in areas like Sarasota. These tiles mimic the appearance of real wood effectively and offer durability suitable for homes with children and pets. Thin-brick is also highlighted as a popular choice for fireplace surrounds and backsplashes, offering texture and warmth as a lighter alternative to traditional brick. The rustic-style wood and shiplap trends that emerged in 2016 are set to continue, with a notable evolution: shiplap will increasingly be painted, perhaps in shades like warm taupe, rather than remaining white. Patterned tiles are also becoming more accessible and affordable, making them attractive options for accent features in master bathrooms or kitchen backsplashes. Finally, the article touches on the increasing demand for smarter homes that integrate technology to enhance convenience and efficiency. This doesn't necessarily mean high-tech solutions, but rather thoughtfully designed living spaces. Ashton Woods, for instance, includes Honeywell smart thermostats as a standard feature in its new homes, allowing residents to control their AC remotely via smartphone. In the Florida market, the company also offers optional kitchen cabinets from the Italian manufacturer Veneta Cucine, which are designed for maximum storage and functionality with features like multi-level drawers and lights that activate upon opening, reflecting a broader trend towards intelligent, user-friendly home solutions. #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #ColorPalettes #KitchenDesign #BathroomTrends #FauxFinishes #SmartHomeTechnology #TileTrends #RusticStyle #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #ColorPalettes #KitchenDesign #BathroomTrends #FauxFinishes #SmartHomeTechnology #TileTrends #RusticStyle
