Wait, Are Chrome Fixtures Actually Back in Style? Designers Gave Us the Scoop

The interior design world has recently been dominated by warm-toned metals such as gold and unlacquered brass. However, a shift back towards cooler metals, particularly classic chrome, is being observed. This article explores whether chrome is indeed making a comeback in home design, gathering insights from four design experts. Priya Vij, founder of Hapny Home, a cabinet hardware company, notes an uptick in silver-toned hardware orders this year. While chrome has always been a consistent seller, it had been overshadowed by brass and black hardware. Vij attributes this resurgence to people seeking softer alternatives to stark black and the brightness offered by cool-toned chrome compared to brass. Will Zhang, director of design and product innovation at Emtek, also confirms chrome's return, linking it to the growing trend of mixing metals in interior spaces. This approach allows individuals to incorporate various finishes rather than adhering to a single one, providing more flexibility and design freedom. Architect and designer Carol Kurth, who is also part of Baldwin Hardware's Design Authority team, emphasizes chrome's timeless quality. She reassures homeowners that choosing chrome for kitchens or bathrooms is a durable and classic decision. Interior designer Amanda Kuhlman offers a slightly different perspective, asserting that chrome never truly went out of style. She has consistently observed its use in both commercial and residential designs, despite the rising popularity of warm-toned metals. When incorporating chrome, designers offer several tips. Zhang suggests pairing chrome with brass or rose gold for added warmth, or creating a monochromatic look by mixing it with satin nickel, pewter, or gunmetal tones. Vij advises balancing chrome's intensity with organic textures like warm-colored rugs, upholstered furniture, or curtains. Lighter neutral wall colors such as rose, white, beige, or gray can soften the look, though deep colors like burgundy can also create a striking contrast. Kurth cautions against using chrome in homes near the ocean due to its vulnerability to saltwater and salty air, which can cause corrosion within a month. Kuhlman recommends using chrome sparingly, suggesting it be applied in small touches such as drawer handles, chair legs, and fixtures to avoid a sterile appearance. The consensus among designers is that chrome is a versatile and elegant choice that can be integrated effectively into modern interiors with thoughtful application. #ChromeFixtures #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #MetalFinishes #DesignTrends #KitchenDesign #BathroomDesign #MixingMetals #ChromeFixtures #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #MetalFinishes #DesignTrends #KitchenDesign #BathroomDesign #MixingMetals
