A London Restaurant’s Candy-Colored Seating Inspired This NYC Duplex’s Kitchen Banquette
Theater costume designer Melissa Ng's SoHo apartment, designed by Jennifer Morris of JMorris Design LLC, presents a whimsical and eclectic aesthetic, akin to a theatrical play. The apartment journey begins in the foyer, where floral wallpaper creates an enveloping space, complemented by a pillar-box red sprinkler pipe that Morris and Ng chose to embrace as a design element. Ng's background in costume design provides her with a natural inclination for textures and prints, which Morris expertly translated into the home's decor.
A key inspiration for the apartment's design was the 2020 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel, _Emma_. Morris noted a richly patterned wallpaper in an afternoon tea scene from the film as a direct influence, guiding the creation of depth, whimsy, and shifting narratives between different spaces within the apartment. The entryway and staircase feature a graphic botanical print, leading to the living room and office. To offer a visual break, Morris painted the wall space above the panels in the living area a clean white before transitioning into the 'peachy lounge,' characterized by its velvet-clad walls. This cozy space seamlessly connects to Ng’s office, which can be privatized by a large steel and glass structure equipped with ombré-dyed linen curtains, custom-made by artist Carolyn Ray.
Morris balanced the cost of these custom elements, including a sculptural light fixture over the desk, with more accessible yet vibrant pieces, such as a hand-tufted rug from Anthropologie. Downstairs, the kitchen, already featuring a forest green and bubblegum pink palette installed by Ng, was completed by Morris with a unique lighting fixture: the Flauti ZigZag chandelier, described as a 'kaleidoscope' by Morris. Ng also drew inspiration from her favorite restaurants, leading to the custom island dining bench, which replicates those seen at Tsukimi in the East Village, crafted by Fern NYC.
The adjoining dining nook further showcases Ng's eclectic taste. Its scalloped banquette directly references the tufted cushions from London's famous Sketch restaurant, originally designed by India Mahdavi. While Sketch's original pink velvet seating inspired Ng, Morris proposed a purple upholstery for the banquette, explaining that lavender harmonizes well with the kitchen's pink backsplash. The dining area is adorned with two wallpapers, with the rattan covering being Ng's personal favorite, as it imparts a 'bistro-summer vibe' to the space.
The duplex also includes three balconies. The primary bedroom's balcony, initially a banana yellow from the developer, was re-envisioned by Morris. She extended the en suite bathroom’s turquoise theme to the balcony walls with a fresh coat of paint and a matching enamel pendant lamp. Even the exposed pipework on the balcony received a vibrant makeover, with Morris humorously stating, 'If you’re gonna be ugly, let’s make you a great color,' reinforcing the apartment's playful and color-centric design philosophy.
