Meet Block artist Jane Harris - famous for her gorgeous rainbows!
Jane Harris, the founder and creator of 'Pick a Pear,' is an Adelaide-based artist known for her original art pieces created with inks, acrylics, watercolor, and gouache. Her artworks are then reproduced into various products, including framed fine art prints, stretched canvas prints, unframed prints, wall decals, and greeting cards, all produced in Australia. The name 'Pick a Pear' stems from her tendency to create artwork in pairs and her affection for pears, allowing customers to choose a single piece or a pair.
Jane has been creating art for many years, fueled by a passion for creativity that her mother recognized when she was just three years old. After having two children and returning to part-time work in her late 30s, she decided to pursue art professionally. She enjoys producing high-quality art for homes and workplaces, drawing inspiration from nature, capturing plants and animals in photographs, and observing décor colors and trends. She also finds inspiration through sketching for hours, with some of her best designs originating from playful experimentation.
Her art is characterized by its refined and detailed nature, often taking days to complete. She particularly enjoys creating intricate illustrations with ink or detailed paintings with watercolor, gouache, or acrylic. While realism is a favorite style, she embraces a mix of artistic approaches. Her popular pieces, like "Rainbow Warrior" and "Little River Love," emerged from quick design sketches. A significant milestone in her career was having her art featured on The Block 2021, a moment she describes as unforgettable. Her artworks were selected by Block contestants Ronnie & Georgia, with assistance from Nadia, The Block Shop designer, for a Block Challenge Room. Under tight deadlines, three of her pieces, including two framed "Rainbow Warrior" fine art prints, were chosen.
Being featured on The Block and becoming a Block Shop artist was a dream come true for Jane, fulfilling a long-held ambition since 2018. She expressed immense gratitude to The Block styling team and the contestants for making her dream a reality. Among her favorite Block couples, she lists Jimmy & Tam, Deb & Andy, Mitch & Mark, Norm & Jess, Ronnie & Georgia, Hayden & Sara, and Alisa & Lysandra, appreciating their interior styling, personalities, and entertainment value. Jane works from a home art studio equipped with all her supplies, an easel, and a drafting table. She aims to relocate her studio in the future to better separate her work and home life. She manages her artistic endeavors around her family, dedicating her days to art creation when her children are at school and her husband is at work, often immersing herself in a piece for hours without distraction.
Her favorite current home decorating trend is wall paneling, citing Ronnie & Georgia’s master bedroom paneling as particularly stunning and inspiring her to replicate a similar style in her own home. Her favorite room is her front lounge room, which boasts high ceilings, an inviting and cozy atmosphere, and abundant afternoon sunshine. If she could renovate any room, it would be her master bedroom, which remains incomplete after an abandoned wallpaper removal project three years prior. She tends to prioritize work and family over renovations but enjoys DIY projects. Her favorite artwork she owns is "Pear Orchard" in Silver Grey, which hangs in her home and is also available at The Block Shop, alongside its companion piece, "Apple Orchard." Her most treasured possession is a drafting table her husband gifted her for her 40th birthday, and she also cherishes her growing collection of Mister Zimi pieces for their fun and colorful reflection of her personality. A perfect Sunday afternoon for Jane involves spending time with family and friends in the sunshine, enjoying good champagne and food. She is currently expanding her business by applying her art to new products, such as her recently launched "Rainbow Arch" wall decal collection, based on her "Rainbow Warrior" artwork featured on The Block, with plans to grow her wall decal range and develop other products.
