Lutron Aurora Philips Hue Dimmer Is The Smartest Smart-Switch Yet
The Lutron Aurora smart bulb dimmer addresses a common issue faced by Philips Hue smart bulb users: accidental power cuts from traditional wall switches. Philips Hue bulbs require a constant power supply to remain connected to their bridge and accessible via the app. When a traditional wall switch is flipped off, the smart bulbs lose power, rendering them inoperable through smart home controls until power is restored. This can be particularly frustrating for household members or guests unfamiliar with smart home operation.
Lutron's Aurora dimmer is designed as a circular knob that installs directly over existing toggle-style light switches. Its key innovation is a mounting plate that locks the underlying switch into the 'on' position, preventing accidental disconnection of the Hue bulbs. This ensures that the smart bulbs remain powered and connected to the Hue bridge, allowing for continuous control through the app or the Aurora dimmer itself. Installation is straightforward, requiring only a screwdriver and an estimated two minutes.
Functionally, the Aurora knob serves as a battery-powered Hue controller. Users can press the knob to toggle the lights on and off, and rotate it to adjust brightness levels. The device is powered by a CR2032 battery, which boasts a lifespan of up to three years. A notable feature is its ability to operate without a Hue bridge in standalone mode, capable of controlling up to twelve connected bulbs directly. When paired with a second-generation Hue bridge (the square model), it integrates seamlessly into an existing Hue ecosystem. Multiple Aurora dimmers can be deployed within a single Hue-equipped home for comprehensive control.
Prior attempts to address smart light control have included the Hue Tap and Hue Wireless Dimming Kit. The Hue Tap, introduced in 2014, offered battery-free scene triggering but lacked the traditional switch appearance and the crucial ability to lock existing switches. The Hue Wireless Dimming Kit, released in 2015, provided a wall-mountable remote with a more conventional look but also failed to prevent accidental wall switch toggling. The Lutron Aurora distinguishes itself by combining intuitive smart control with a physical mechanism to maintain constant power to the smart bulbs.
The Lutron Aurora is available for preorder at $39.95, with shipments expected in June. This product marks Lutron's entry into the 'Friends of Hue' program, an initiative aimed at expanding the connected bulb ecosystem with compatible accessories from various manufacturers. This collaboration allows for a broader range of smart home solutions that enhance the user experience of Philips Hue lighting systems.
