Hue Smart Button: Dimming function always affects all lamps in the room
The Philips Hue Smart Button has garnered considerable attention, despite its perceived resource intensiveness and cost. A particular function, the dimming capability, exhibits a behavior that deviates from optimal user experience. While the button effectively manages light activation with a short press, cycling through scenes, and deactivation after a brief pause, the long-press dimming feature presents a limitation. A single long press dims the lights, and a subsequent long press increases brightness. This functionality becomes problematic when managing multiple lamps within a room or zone.
Specifically, the dimming function of the Hue Smart Button indiscriminately controls all lamps in a given room or zone, even those that are currently switched off. For instance, if a living room contains ten Philips Hue lights, and a user selects a scene where only two lamps are illuminated for watching television, attempting to use the dimming function of the Smart Button will activate and adjust the brightness of all ten lamps, including the eight that were previously off. This behavior is not ideal, as the expectation is for the dimming function to only affect the lights that are actively switched on by a scene or a manual configuration.
In contrast, the Philips Hue dimmer switch demonstrates the desired behavior by only controlling the currently active lamps. This suggests that the technical implementation to achieve selective dimming for the Smart Button should be feasible. The current design of the Smart Button's dimming functionality, therefore, creates an inconvenience for users who utilize specific lighting arrangements within multi-lamp environments, as it overrides predefined states by activating and adjusting all lights rather than only the illuminated ones. Addressing this discrepancy would enhance the user experience and align the Smart Button's performance with that of other Philips Hue control devices.
