laser-cut steel stair railing in nervous system's new studio recalls plant tissue morphology
Nervous System, a design studio located in the Catskill Mountains of New York, has developed an algorithmically-generated, laser-cut steel stair railing for their new studio. The design is inspired by plant tissue morphology and extends continuously along the 40-foot (12.2 m) long railing, displaying patterns at varying scales. The innovative railing integrates scientific principles with artistic expression, creating a unique and dynamic architectural feature.
The design's progression begins at the bottom of the staircase, where dense cellular waves gradually transition into rings, then spirals, and eventually evolve into large-scale radial cells. This mimics the microscopic structures found in plant tissues. To achieve these intricate and organic formations, Nervous System utilized their proprietary 'Corollaria' software. This software employs an optimization process involving anisotropic centroidal Voronoi diagrams, which enables the cells to adapt and distribute themselves effectively in response to a morphic background metric. The 'Corollaria' software is central to creating the naturalistic, evolving patterns seen throughout the railing, demonstrating a sophisticated blend of computational design and biological inspiration.
The railing is fabricated from 10-gauge steel, which undergoes a precise laser-cutting process to create the detailed patterns. Following the cutting, the steel is powder-coated in a matte black finish, providing durability and a sleek aesthetic that highlights the intricate design. The entire design was segmented into six distinct panels, with one panel specifically bent to accommodate the corner of the staircase, ensuring a seamless and continuous visual flow. Hatfield Metal Fabrication in Poughkeepsie, New York, was responsible for the laser cutting, executing the complex designs with precision. The collaboration between Nervous System's design expertise and Hatfield Metal Fabrication's manufacturing capabilities resulted in a functional yet sculptural element that defines the studio's interior.
The project underscores Nervous System’s commitment to combining scientific research with design innovation, translating complex biological structures into architectural elements. The railing serves not only as a safety feature but also as a prominent artistic statement, reflecting the studio's ethos of generative design. The use of algorithmic design tools allows for the creation of unique, non-repeating patterns that evolve along the structure, making each section of the railing distinct while maintaining overall coherence. This approach offers a new perspective on how natural forms can be interpreted and integrated into modern design, pushing the boundaries of traditional architectural components.
