This hack for your curtains will instantly make them look more expensive – and it evens work on ones from IKEA
Curtains are often an overlooked design element in a home, yet they can significantly impact a space's aesthetic. While high-quality curtains can be expensive, there are ways to achieve an expensive look on a budget. IKEA offers a variety of budget-friendly curtains, and an easy hack can instantly elevate their appearance: pinch pleats.
Pinch pleats create a more tailored look, helping curtains drape uniformly and enhancing their polished, high-quality appearance. To implement this hack, one needs curtain rings and pleat hooks. This method is suitable for most IKEA curtains that come with pleating tape. If the curtains do not have pleating tape, it can be added using a sewing machine. For those willing to invest slightly more, opting for high-quality fabrics like silk, velvet, linen, or cotton blends can further enhance the custom drapery feel.
The process begins with inserting pleating hooks into the pleating tape. The space between the string tabs on the tape should be treated as distinct sections, initially ignoring the smaller sections at each end of the curtain. Starting from the second section, the first prong of a pleating hook is inserted into the fourth pocket from the beginning of the section. The next two pockets are left empty, and the second prong is inserted into the third pocket thereafter (the seventh pocket from the start of the section). This pattern continues, leaving two empty pockets between each prong, until four prongs are inserted. Each hook will occupy pockets in a sequence of fourth, seventh, tenth, and thirteenth pockets, leaving three empty pockets at the end of that section.
The pleating tape typically has three rows of pockets. For ease of insertion, it is recommended to insert all four prongs into the first row of pockets, then into the middle row, and finally into the top row. This fiddly process simplifies fitting the prongs into the tighter spaces. After completing the main sections, one pleating hook should be inserted into each of the small end sections on either side of the curtain to prevent drooping. In these end sections, no pleating is required, so all four prongs are inserted into the first four pockets.
Once the pleating hooks are in place, the curtains can be hung. This is best done after the curtain rod is installed with curtain rings attached. Each pleat hook is slipped into the corresponding eyelet of a curtain ring. It is advisable to count the necessary number of curtain rings before threading them onto the rod.
Styling tips for pinch-pleated curtains include hanging them from the ceiling to the floor, even for smaller windows, to create an illusion of higher ceilings and a more sophisticated look. Layering curtains, such as using sheer curtains underneath heavier drapes, can add depth, dimension, and elegance to the window treatment. This pinch pleat hack offers an effective way to elevate the appearance of curtains, even budget-friendly ones, and is an opportune moment to consider upgrading curtain hardware for a complete interior design refresh.
