The Hearth electric heater puts a twist on the act of building a fire
The Hearth is a novel furniture piece that redefines the traditional fireplace for modern urban living, functioning as a hybrid coffee table and electric heater. Designed by Burton Maximillian of Industrial Craft, this innovative product addresses the impracticality of conventional wood-burning fireplaces in contemporary homes, which often lack proper ventilation and incur significant installation and maintenance costs. The Hearth offers a solution by integrating the aesthetic and communal appeal of a fire with the convenience and safety of an electric appliance.
At first glance, the Hearth presents itself as a minimalist coffee table, featuring a sleek black tabletop and a shuttered facade. Its primary innovation lies in its interactive rotational mechanism, which transforms the table into a functional electric fireplace. Users activate and control the heating element by twisting the tabletop clockwise, similar to adjusting a thermostat dial. As the top rotates, the table's finned base incrementally opens, revealing a warm core and emitting an ambient light, thereby visually indicating the increasing temperature. This design aims to replicate the visual and sensory experience of a burning fire without the need for actual combustion.
The operational principle of the Hearth involves drawing in air through hidden ducts located on its underside. This air is then heated by an internal filament, which simultaneously emits light through the voids in the table's facade, creating a visual effect reminiscent of flickering flames. The heated air is subsequently expelled 360 degrees through the fins of the base, effectively warming the surrounding room. This 360-degree heat distribution ensures efficient and even heating across the space.
Burton Maximillian's design reimagines the ancient ritual of gathering around a fire, adapting it for the urban dweller. The warm, ambient light emitted by the Hearth serves as a visual focal point, drawing individuals in and providing a clear indication of the rising temperature. The circular form of the table is intentionally chosen to foster a sense of community and gathering, echoing the social function of traditional fireplaces. Furthermore, the interactive nature of controlling the heat through the rotational tabletop provides a modern interpretation of the physical act of building and tending a fire, making the user an active participant in regulating their comfort. This blend of traditional symbolism with modern technology creates a unique and engaging domestic centerpiece that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, offering a contemporary twist on a timeless comfort.
