This terracotta chimney gives you the warmth of a fireplace in a small, sustainable package
The Tornado, a terracotta-based heater designed by NextNova, offers a safe and sustainable alternative to traditional fireplaces, particularly in homes where older fireplaces are often decommissioned due to safety concerns. This innovative device combines the aesthetic appeal and comforting warmth of a fire with modern design and environmental considerations.
Functioning without smoke, ash, harmful chemicals, or unpleasant odors, the Tornado utilizes bioethanol as its fuel, absorbed by ceramic wool. This allows for safe indoor use, eliminating the risk of triggering fire alarms or compromising air quality. Its design draws inspiration from NextNova's previous product, the Egloo, which was noted for its affordability as a heating solution.
Standing at 17 inches tall, the Tornado is significantly larger than the Egloo, featuring an internal chamber engineered to create a substantial fire vortex. This design enhances heat generation, producing 7000 BTU (British Thermal Units) of heat without consuming electricity, effectively serving as a compact, in-room campfire.
A key feature of the Tornado is its ability to create a tall, captivating flame, which is achieved through strategically placed openings in its vertical chamber. These openings channel air to amplify the fire, creating a wind vortex that can lift the flame up to five times its normal height. This not only increases the heater's thermal output but also provides an engaging visual display.
To ensure durability and safety, the Tornado incorporates metal components that absorb excess heat, protecting the terracotta shell from cracking. The terracotta shell then radiates warmth, distributing it throughout the space. The device is versatile enough for both indoor and outdoor environments, offering a fireplace-like experience without the inherent dangers of open flames or smoke.
Beyond its heating capabilities, the Tornado can also function as an aroma diffuser. By adding a few drops of essential oil to the ceramic wool, the heat facilitates the release of aromatic compounds into the air, similar to a scented candle. The design also prioritizes ease of use for ignition and extinguishment. The top hood can be lifted to access the heat-resistant ceramic tray and ceramic wool, where bio-ethanol is poured. A long-neck lighter can be inserted through side openings to ignite the flame, and a flame snuffer can be used to quickly extinguish it.
The Tornado successfully concluded its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, raising $88,485 from nearly 500 backers. Backers will have the option to choose from a variety of colors, including classic beige and orange, as well as white, blue, red, and black, allowing for personalization to suit different interior aesthetics.
