Maximalism Is Still Thriving. Just Check out This Bright, Sunny (and Affordable) Patio
The article details a patio redesign project led by celebrity interior designer Breegan Jane, known from "The House My Wedding Bought" on Discovery+ and HGTV. Jane transformed her previously uninspired patio into a vibrant, functional outdoor oasis, embracing the maximalist trend of layered textures and bright colors, all while adhering to a budget. The initial state of her patio featured a turquoise daybed but was otherwise an uncoordinated collection of furniture with a lack of cohesive accessories.
The redesign process began with a collaboration with retailers TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Jane emphasized the crucial first step of measuring the space to accommodate larger furniture pieces like a dining table, chairs, fire pit, and bar. This meticulous measurement allowed her to integrate an outdoor living room with multiple distinct seating areas within a relatively compact footprint. She advises starting with sourcing base pieces online and then visiting stores to physically engage with products for inspiration and to ensure suitability.
Jane's design philosophy for this project heavily leaned into maximalism, incorporating rich textures, bright colors, and diverse prints. For the fire pit area, she selected burnt orange pillows, creating a cozy and conversational atmosphere. The daybed and an adjacent seating area were adorned with a complementary color palette of yellows and turquoise, with additional texture introduced through rope chairs. These rope chairs were also utilized at the bar area, showcasing how precise measurements facilitated a harmonious layout.
A key practical consideration in the design was the use of melamine accessories for both the bar and dining areas. Jane chose melamine for its durability and bright aesthetic, making it suitable for a space frequented by children and guests without the worry of breakage. She highlighted that these items provided a pop of color and allowed her to relax and enjoy her outdoor space without constant concern over fragile items.
The patio is further enriched with a variety of textured accessories, including indoor/outdoor embroidered pillows with tassels, a stone gas fire pit, and a palm plant housed in a matte pot. Affordability was a significant factor, with Jane pointing out specific budget-friendly finds such as solar lights at $16.99 each, melamine wine glasses at $12.99 for a pack of four, and tasseled pillows starting at $19.99. To unify the different zones of the patio, two area rugs were incorporated—one yellow and one gray and white. Jane noted that these rugs not only ground the space but also enhance the living room feel, making the outdoor area more inviting and social. The transformation resulted in a patio that Jane describes as a "happy little oasis," visible from her front door and designed for extensive outdoor living during the summer.
