Luxury Bathroom Accessories That Transformed Our Space
This blog post details a bathroom refresh project, focusing on transforming a standard builder-grade bathroom into a luxurious space using high-quality accessories and strategic upgrades. The authors highlight their collaboration with Serena & Lily to achieve a refined aesthetic. Initially, budget constraints during the new home build prevented extensive bathroom customization, leading them to prioritize the kitchen and shower. Over a year later, they embarked on a project to elevate the bathroom's design and functionality.
The transformation involved several key steps. First, the existing builder-grade mirrors were replaced with new, beautifully framed mirrors. Overhead vanity lighting, which is often unflattering, was removed and replaced with sconces requiring new electrical wiring. This change aimed to provide more flattering illumination, enhancing the overall user experience within the space. Drywall repairs were also conducted as needed due to the changes in mirror and lighting fixtures. Furthermore, an in-cabinet plug was installed to conveniently power hair tools, and the existing can/recessed lighting was removed to make way for a pendant light over the freestanding bathtub, a feature the homeowners found themselves using more than anticipated.
The project spanned approximately two days for the contractors, costing around $1,100 for labor. Including the cost of mirrors, sconces, and other accessories, the total investment for this refresh amounted to about $3,000. The emphasis was on selecting high-quality, aesthetically pleasing pieces that align with the homeowners' style, rather than a full renovation.
A significant challenge during the refresh was selecting mirrors due to the bathroom's asymmetrical layout, with one vanity being wider than the other and an off-center sink. After an extensive search, the authors decided against matching mirrors of different widths, opting instead for identical bone inlay mirrors, centering them on their respective sinks or vanity spaces. These "fog" colored mirrors, described as a gorgeous dark gray, added character with their organic, imperfect bone inlay detail, filling the space effectively without overwhelming it. The mirrors were hung four inches from the backsplash, a height suitable for both the 5'3" author and her 5'10" partner.
The lighting upgrade included a striking black pendant light over the freestanding bathtub, which provided a bold contrast and balanced the room's lines. Globe sconces were installed on either side of the mirrors, positioned two-thirds of the way up the wall to achieve an optimal aesthetic. The authors note the importance of flexibility during design projects, as initial concepts may evolve to better suit the space. Completing the luxurious feel were smaller details, such as a comfortable X stool by the tub for seating, which introduced a warm natural tone to break up the dominant gray, black, and white palette. Serena & Lily bath mats and towels were also highlighted for their quality, plush feel, and quick-drying properties, contributing to the overall sense of luxury and comfort in the newly transformed bathroom.
