Weekend Design: San Diego Bathroom Gets Gatsby-Style Glitz
This article details a recent bathroom remodel in downtown San Diego, transforming a functional but dated space into a crisp, classic, and glamorous area inspired by 1920s Gatsby style. The design, executed by Corine Maggio of CM Natural Designs, successfully blends high-contrast black and white elements with subtle details to avoid a sterile appearance. The remodel was undertaken for newlyweds and the husband’s teenage son, with a total size of 75 square feet, comprising a 12-by-5-foot main bathroom area and a 3-by-5-foot water closet.
A key element in achieving the desired aesthetic while staying within budget was the selection of an off-the-shelf vanity with a marble top. To personalize it, the original faucets and hardware were replaced with antique brass finishes, a favorite of the homeowners, and black faucets were introduced for a contemporary contrast. A practical towel ring was also discreetly added to the vanity’s side. The use of antique brass extends to the mirrors and three hanging pendants, contributing to the vintage feel, while the black faucets provide a modern touch. The designer appreciated the clients' openness to incorporate new trends into the traditional style.
Before the renovation, the bathroom featured a tub-shower combination that cluttered the space and lacked the classic, high-contrast, and clean look the clients desired. In the redesigned bathroom, the tub was replaced with a spacious shower stall, creating a more open feel. A unique shower divider with black mullions was chosen to enhance the contrast and maintain a classic aesthetic, diverging from a clear glass option that would have appeared too modern. The homeowners also requested a rain shower head; despite initial concerns about removing a skylight, a wall-mounted rain shower head with a vintage look was found, preserving natural light.
The design incorporates wainscoting, which is continued throughout the bathroom, featuring a high-gloss black finish. This element contributes to the room's completeness and grounds the space. Above the wainscoting, textured wallpaper adds a subtle detail that prevents the black and white scheme from becoming too stark, introducing warmth to the small area. Classic glass doorknobs were installed to evoke a sense of age, and vintage photographs of San Diego and La Jolla adorn the walls as art pieces.
On the shower floor, small black and white hex tiles were used, introducing a playful and casual rhythm to the otherwise sophisticated space. Elongated subway tiles were selected for the shower walls, offering an updated take on a popular choice. The main floor of the bathroom features 18-by-18-inch Bianco Carrara marble tiles laid in a diamond pattern, adding visual interest and different textures to the room. For additional storage and display, an apothecary cabinet from Restoration Hardware was included, providing drawers for jewelry and a top section for favorite pieces. A clock in the cabinet serves as both a vintage accent and a functional item for keeping track of time. These older pieces were deliberately chosen to imbue the home with a lived-in feel and character.
