1960s Wallpaper Gives This Green Kitchen Major Charisma

Claudia and Chris Beiler, who operate the renovation and real estate firm Chris and Claude Co., recently undertook the remodeling of a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, townhome with the intent to sell. The project focused significantly on the kitchen, which received a budget of approximately $15,000 for its transformation. Despite a comprehensive overhaul, the couple made a conscious decision to retain two original features: a vibrant, picnic-themed 1960s wallpaper and the existing wood floors. The wallpaper, initially a bright orange, was considered a charming relic of the home's past owners, prompting the Beilers to preserve as much of it as possible. The wood floors were also kept, undergoing a sanding and resealing process with a water-based polyurethane coating to enhance their natural color and brightness. For the kitchen's new design, the Beilers implemented army green concrete counters, a porcelain tile backsplash, and brass ceiling pendants, aiming to balance modern updates with the home's historical character. The cabinetry, sourced from Home Depot, featured flat panels painted in Behr’s "Fig Tree" green. Given the home's proximity to downtown restaurants, the kitchen storage was designed with practicality in mind for light-to-medium cooking, incorporating open shelving to facilitate easy access to items. To compensate for the reduced upper millwork, a larger, taller pantry was installed. This pantry, strategically placed near the preserved vintage wallpaper, provides ample storage, currently accommodating non-cooking essentials such as board games for the home's resident. The choice of concrete for the countertops was driven by Claudia's preference for the material, though she opted for a green hue over traditional gray to offer a unique aesthetic that would also be forgiving of spills. This green concrete proved to be a cost-effective alternative, comparable in price to mid-grade quartz or low-grade granite. The backsplash was created using chalky black porcelain tiles, a material Claudia had previously used for a bathroom floor project, chosen for its durability and surprising affordability. The installation team confirmed the tiles' quality despite their low cost, reflecting a commitment to both aesthetic appeal and financial prudence. During the renovation of the floors, the discovery of a concrete patch replacing a section of the original 1800s hardwoods presented a design challenge. Instead of seeking to perfectly match and replace the missing planks, the Beilers chose to leave the concrete patch as an intentional feature. This decision was made to honor the home's history and tell a story about its evolution over time, suggesting that a past DIY alteration could be reinterpreted as a unique characteristic rather than a flaw.
