Reader project: How to make glass pendant lamps with a Target bowl
Rachel and Gareth, a Darwin couple, undertook a DIY project to create custom glass pendant lamps for their kitchen after finding store-bought options too expensive and not aligning with their aesthetic preferences. They were inspired to design their own lighting solution when they discovered a suitable glass bowl at Target. The couple's home already features a blend of modern, Scandi, and industrial styles, which they describe as a "modern cave," and they sought pendant lights that would complement this existing decor.
The project involved using three glass bowls from Target, priced at $8 each, along with a Verve design 5-head Anton pendant from Bunnings for $70. They also used three Phillips 7W 806 soft white LED globes, costing $12 each from Woolworths, and a diamond drill bit for $20 from Bunnings. The total cost for materials was approximately $165, excluding the electrician's fees and wood for the bulkhead which they already owned. The couple expressed a strong preference for DIY projects, enjoying the satisfaction of crafting items for their home, which also includes various pieces of furniture such as a dining table, kitchen benchtops, TV cabinet, coffee tables, and an outdoor dining table, all made by Gareth, with Rachel contributing to garden landscaping and home rearrangement.
A significant challenge encountered during the process was cutting precise holes into the glass bowls without causing them to break, an operation that also produced a loud, piercing sound. The technical steps involved cutting holes in the bowls using a 20mm diamond hole saw and pilot drill, removing existing sockets and unwanted cords from the pendant light, and creating a hollow bulkhead from Victorian Ash (leftovers from their kitchen benchtops) to conceal the pendant hanger and excess cables. Two sturdy blocks were then made to fit inside the bulkhead, fixed to the ceiling batons, allowing the finished pendant to be slipped over them. The final electrical connections were performed by a licensed electrician to ensure safety and functionality.
The resulting pendant lamps successfully integrated into their Scandi-style kitchen, providing a brighter and more open look compared to conventional options. The grey color of the glass bowls harmonized with their stainless steel appliances, creating a focal point in the kitchen visible upon entry. This DIY approach enabled them to achieve a custom lighting solution that perfectly matched their desired aesthetic and budget, highlighting the benefits of personal craftsmanship in home decoration.
