Are These Highly-Rated LED Lights Worth the Money?
This review evaluates the Philips Hue Light Strip, a popular LED lighting product designed for various home applications such as illuminating countertops, bookshelves, and televisions. The product is part of a starter kit that includes an 80-inch coated light strip, connection cords, and a hub capable of controlling up to 50 lights and 12 Hue accessories. Control of the lights is managed entirely through a dedicated app, as there are no manual controls on the strip or a remote. The Philips Hue Light Strip is notable for its impressive brightness, which allows it to function effectively as both accent and task lighting, even surpassing the illumination provided by some kitchen overhead lights. Users can customize light 'temperature' from cool blue to warm white, and access a wide array of color options and schemes inspired by moods, rooms, or times of the day, all savable to a personal profile for easy access. The app also facilitates scheduling, enabling lights to turn on or off at predetermined times, a feature highlighted for its convenience and potential security benefits.
However, the review identifies significant drawbacks, primarily concerning connectivity and adhesive strength. The installation process of the physical light strip was straightforward, involving peeling and sticking the adhesive backing. Challenges arose due to kitchen cabinet seams, which prevented continuous adhesion and later compromised the strip's sticking power, especially given the strip's thicker coating and heavier weight compared to other models. The most critical issue was the hub and app connectivity. The hub required a direct connection to the router, and the app frequently struggled to connect to the hub, often requiring multiple attempts over several days and repeated uninstallation and reinstallation of the app to function. This persistent connectivity problem meant that controlling the lights—adjusting colors, patterns, or even turning them on or off—was often impossible, forcing the user to resort to unplugging the lights. While the scheduling feature worked independently of the live app connection once set, the overall user experience was marred by these control difficulties.
Considering its price point, which is higher than many alternative light strips, the Philips Hue Light Strip's value is questioned. While its brightness, quality of light, and extensive scheduling capabilities are commendable, the recurring connectivity issues are deemed a deal-breaker. The 80-inch length of the strip is also noted as relatively short compared to competitors, although it offers flexibility for cutting at designated points. The review concludes that despite its excellent lighting performance and features, the reliability problems with the app and hub connectivity undermine its overall worth, suggesting that other, more consistently functional strip lights might be a better choice, even if they don't match the Philips Hue in sheer brightness or light quality. The core problem lies in the extensive effort required to manage the system, which detracts significantly from the user experience.
