This incredible arched range hood sees the marble kitchen trend taken to the next level
This article highlights an innovative kitchen design featuring a book-matched arched marble cooker hood in a home located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The property, initially a rundown space, was transformed into a luxurious yet practical home for a family with three children by Cdot Design Studio, led by Carrie Hupp and senior designer Chelsea Duran.
The arched marble cooker hood became a central design element, almost not making it into the final plan due to budget constraints. However, the design team strongly advocated for its inclusion, believing it would be a captivating feature for any future homeowner. Through some convincing and value engineering in other areas of the project, the marble arch was reinstated.
Carrie Hupp explains that the home was envisioned in a soft modern Spanish style with a warm desert aesthetic, incorporating existing arched elements on the site. This inspired the creation of layered archways throughout the common areas, which ultimately led to the concept of the arched hood. When viewed from the family room, the kitchen's arched doorway frames the magnificent marble arch hood, establishing it as the focal point of the space.
The design incorporates other arched elements, such as patio doors and an art ledge on the opposite side of the kitchen, creating a cohesive visual flow and drawing visitors from one area to another. The curved lines of the arch complement the fluted kitchen island and cabinetry, contributing to a soft and natural ambiance. The neutral color scheme and use of wooden materials further enhance the calming atmosphere, providing an elegant contrast to the white marble of the hood and countertop.
The designers opted for marble, specifically Arabescato Moon Marble, for its ability to convey an organic, yet luxurious, feel. They selected this particular marble for its warm tones, aiming to integrate the kitchen's aesthetic with the natural desert landscape outside. The initial intention was to clad both the face and the inside of the arch with marble, seamlessly merging it with the kitchen backsplash. However, the tight arch and budget limitations led to a revision of this plan.
Ultimately, the marble was applied only to the face of the arch, with a clean, smooth edge running along the inside. This decision, initially a compromise, was deemed successful by Carrie, as it allowed for beautifully executed returns at the outside corners. To ensure longevity and conceal natural etching, the marble received a honed leathered finish, providing a perfectly worn-in look with a robust two-inch mitered edge. The project culminated in a home that the designers and homeowners alike cherish.
