Are reading nooks the new must-have? The cosy home feature that got us hooked
As autumn approaches, the concept of a reading nook is emerging as a highly desirable home feature, aligning with a growing interest in creating cozy and personal spaces. This trend reflects a broader cultural shift towards valuing wellbeing and embracing 'JOMO' (the joy of missing out), where individuals actively seek comfort and escapism within their homes. A recent nationwide study by Eurocell, a home improvement specialist, indicates that a dedicated reading room is the third most coveted extra room among homeowners, trailing only a home office and a gym. For those without the luxury of an entire room, a reading nook offers a compact yet equally effective solution for personal retreat.
The appeal of reading nooks is rooted in the desire for a tranquil sanctuary from the demands of modern life. Interior designers and home decor experts observe a significant increase in interest in these spaces. Lesley Taylor, an interior designer and founder of The Baked Tile Company, notes that reading nooks provide an opportunity to unwind with a favorite book, either alone or with family, mirroring the evolution of bathrooms into spa-like havens. Lucy Mather, a design expert from Arighi Bianchi, anticipates a surge in visually appealing reading nooks on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram as people increasingly prioritize wellbeing through home comfort.
Creating a reading nook does not necessitate extensive space or renovation. The core principle involves identifying a quiet and relaxing corner within an existing room, such as a bedroom, living room, or even a conservatory with a garden view. Mather suggests repurposing existing furniture like lamps, side tables, and rugs to define and enhance the area, fostering a mini-sanctuary without significant investment. Key elements for an ideal reading nook include comfortable seating, such as a large armchair that offers a sense of being 'cocooned,' as described by Mather.
Focused lighting is another essential component, allowing for comfortable reading without straining the eyes. Easy access to a collection of books is also crucial for convenience and immersion. Additionally, incorporating a side table provides a practical surface for placing beverages or resting a book during pauses. A fluffy rug can further enhance the coziness and visually delineate the reading nook from the rest of the room. The trend underscores the value of creating dedicated spaces for relaxation and personal indulgence, promoting a sense of calm and escape from the everyday hustle.
