Take Inspiration from These Luxe His-and-Hers Closets
Customized closet spaces are increasingly viewed as luxurious havens within a home, offering more than just storage; they provide a boutique-like refuge when designed with a discerning eye. The potential for such spaces is limited only by imagination and available square footage. Recently, The Container Store collaborated with two prominent interior designers, Huma Sulaiman of Huma Sulaiman Interiors and Amelia Milton of Schooler Kellogg Interiors, to create distinct his-and-hers closets for the primary bedrooms featured in the 2022 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Dallas. Both designers utilized The Container Store’s Preston Collection, a closet system celebrated for its bespoke details, adaptable configurations, and luxurious features such as soft-close drawers and glass shelving, elevating functional storage into a form of art.
Huma Sulaiman’s design for the men's closet, aptly named “Shaken not Stirred,” envisioned a “gentleman’s lair” inspired by a Moroccan retreat. Her goal was to transform the closet into a relaxing space, suitable for a drink or reading. This moody and modern ambiance is established through plush goldenrod carpeting featuring an Art Deco pattern, providing a midcentury feel, complemented by comfortable seating. Artistic elements, including a framed black-and-white photograph and a wheeled bar cart, further enhance the sophisticated hotel suite aesthetic. The Preston system in a dark “Midnight” finish, combined with textured black wallpaper and brown velvet drapery, reinforces the moody atmosphere. The design incorporates leather-wrapped and glass shelves, soft-close drawers with integrated matte black rods and handles, and a gliding pant rack for easy outfit selection. A credenza made from recycled crocodile leather occupies the center of this dressing room. The Preston line offers versatility with 11 finishes and high-end hardware options like chrome, slate, matte gold, acrylic, and oil-rubbed bronze. The built-in cabinetry, drawers, and LED lighting elegantly display suits behind glass fronts while concealing everyday items.
Amelia Milton, on the other hand, infused her women’s closet with old-world elegance and European charm, creating a dreamy Belle Epoque-inspired dressing area. She also employed custom built-ins from the Preston Collection but chose a delicate fawn finish for the wall-to-wall cabinetry, aiming for a luxurious yet understated feminine space. The design includes both smooth and Shaker decorative fronts, soft-close hardware, and glass inserts. A strategically placed ombre settee in a mirrored nook offers a comfortable spot for shoe fittings or a brief rest. For smaller walk-in closets, a similar aesthetic can be achieved by integrating a seating area within a wall of cabinets. Milton emphasized the display of clothing as a spectacle, utilizing freestanding dress forms and full-length glass cases to showcase gowns as art. The glass fronts of the Preston vitrine-like cabinetry were instrumental in achieving this museum-like presentation. Special items, such as family heirloom dresses, can be incorporated into the décor by displaying them in glass-front cabinets. These examples highlight how custom organizational systems can transform utilitarian spaces into personalized, luxurious retreats, offering inspiring ideas for homeowners to replicate.
