How Chris Loves Julia Flipped a 77-Square-Foot Hallway Into a Sunny Playroom
Chris and Julia Marcum, known for their blog Chris Loves Julia, transformed a 77-square-foot hallway nook in their Idaho Falls home into a permanent playroom for their three daughters, Greta (10), Faye (6), and Polly (3). Initially intended as a temporary storage space for toys during a ground-floor renovation, the nook proved to be a highly effective play area, leading the couple to decide against creating a larger, separate playroom. The entire transformation was completed on a budget of less than $3,000.
The renovation began with addressing the flooring. The original space featured a distracting red and white “circus herringbone” carpet. The Marcums removed this and installed new wide-plank engineered flooring, consistent with the rest of the house. To add softness and comfort for play, an area rug was introduced, making the space more suitable for the children. This initial phase demonstrated their approach of undertaking projects in stages.
Next, the couple focused on establishing a permanent aesthetic for the playroom. Julia Marcum aimed for a British-inspired, modern-Grandma's house feel, drawing on childhood memories with her four sisters. This vision led to a soft color palette, with cabinets painted in a warm tan rather than a bright yellow. This technique of using neutral versions of brighter hues was applied throughout their home. Metal hardware on the cabinets was replaced with painted wood knobs to enhance an old English charm, complemented by wicker lamp bases, framed cameos of the children, and a fairy tale-esque etching.
A significant design element was the wallpaper. Julia selected a golden stripe wall covering from Chasing Paper for the built-in storage areas, finding it both traditional and playful. She initially attempted to use peel-and-stick wallpaper, but it failed to adhere to the slightly textured walls. Undeterred, she reordered the same pattern in an adhesive version, realizing her strong preference for the design and confirming her commitment to it. This incident, though a setback, solidified her design choice.
Maximizing the L-shaped layout of the narrow space was crucial due to its limited square footage. Since toys were already efficiently stored within the built-in units, the focus shifted to functional furniture that wouldn't overcrowd the area. Julia opted for minimal bulky pieces, recognizing her daughters' preference for playing on the floor. A chest for costumes served a dual purpose by also holding the girls’ play treehouse. Additionally, a dresser was placed in the under-utilized hallway section to store kids' bedding, positioned centrally for easy access from all three bedrooms. This dresser was topped with books, and a small chair was added nearby to create a cozy reading nook, aiming to evoke warm memories and a sense of home.
