A Conversation With Interior Designer Naomi Coe: The Queen Of Modern Nursery Design
Naomi Coe, founder of Little Crown Interiors, has become a prominent figure in modern nursery design. She emphasizes creating sophisticated spaces that cater to parents' tastes, ensuring they feel calm and happy, which in turn positively influences the child. Her designs aim for longevity, ensuring babies do not quickly outgrow their rooms.
Coe's specialization in nurseries and children's rooms was an accidental discovery after graduating from design school during the 2007 recession. She found fulfillment in this niche, appreciating the blend of creativity and the consistent need for essential baby items and safety considerations. This led her to co-found her own design studio in 2008.
During the pandemic, Coe published "Your Perfect Nursery: A Step-by-Step Approach to Creating the Nursery of Your Dreams." The book addresses a gap in the market for comprehensive nursery design resources, offering guidance on aspects like shopping and budgeting, similar to how wedding planning books cater to every detail. It aims to alleviate stress for expecting parents.
One of the most significant trends Coe has observed recently is the prevalence of layered neutral colors in nurseries. She attributes this to the increased time people spent at home during the Covid-19 pandemic, leading to a preference for calm and cozy environments. Additionally, more parents are choosing to keep the baby's sex a surprise, further driving the demand for gender-neutral designs. Coe believes this neutral trend is not fleeting but a long-term shift, though she anticipates a return of more vibrant colors alongside neutrals.
For 2023, Coe predicts a shift away from gold as the primary metallic accent, with increasing requests for silver, bronze, and black. She also foresees a resurgence of sophisticated traditional elements, such as picture frame molding and embellished furniture, even within modern homes. Her favorite color, muted mossy green, is expected to gain popularity in nursery designs.
Regarding furniture sourcing, Coe highly recommends Babyletto for stylish and affordable cribs, and Nursery Works for high-end options. For dressers, she prefers mixing and matching pieces from design showrooms, often adding a changing tray, or exploring online and retail stores like Anthropologie and Restoration Hardware.
Essential nursery items include a safe sleeping space (bassinet or crib), a comfortable glider for feeding and rocking, and a changing area (dresser or changing table). In a minimalist approach, a safe sleep space and a monitor are sufficient. When styling a nursery, lighting is a critical element, especially since nurseries often lack ample natural light. Multiple light sources and the correct bulb color can significantly enhance the room's aesthetic. Incorporating real or faux plants and flowers is another key styling trick to bring life into the space, with faux options being safer for nurseries.
