Dana Oberson Brings an Eclectic Touch to Israel’s Publica Isrotel
The Publica Isrotel, Marriott's inaugural property in Herzliya, just north of Tel Aviv, is strategically located to capitalize on the city's scenic coastline and burgeoning tech industry. This 159-room hotel, designed by Dana Oberson Architects, is characterized by its eclectic aesthetic, achieved through the incorporation of custom-designed elements and art pieces sourced globally. The hotel offers a diverse range of amenities, including a stage for various events, a lobby lounge, a comprehensive fitness center, and shared co-working spaces, catering to both guests and local residents. Dana Oberson describes the design process as akin to assembling a puzzle, where seemingly disparate elements are brought together to create a cohesive and unique eclectic atmosphere.
Key design features highlight this eclectic approach. The guest rooms are furnished with floor lamps, pendants, and sconces supplied by Kamchi Lighting, complemented by chairs from Asshaf Turkey. The hotel's bar area showcases a blend of materials, featuring red stone and Carrara counters, positioned adjacent to a distinctive buffet bar. This buffet bar, a personal favorite of Oberson's, is crafted from natural iron and green zellige tiles. Oberson appreciates how this practical item, designed for serving and cooling food, transcends its functional purpose to resemble a vintage piece, suggesting a timeless presence within the space.
Beyond the interior spaces, the Publica Isrotel extends its offerings to an inviting rooftop pool deck, equipped with tables, stools, and umbrellas from Renby. This area provides a panoramic view of the city, creating an ideal setting for relaxation and social interaction. A significant component of the hotel's concept is the City Club, a community hub accessible to both hotel guests and local residents. Oberson envisions this club as a versatile environment that seamlessly integrates work and leisure, fostering a sense of community.
Throughout the hotel, custom pieces and globally sourced items contribute to the distinct design narrative. The foyer leading to the sixth-floor business lounge features bespoke furnishings alongside a stereo console discovered at a Jaffa flea market, adding a touch of vintage charm. The reception area is distinguished by a custom desk and floors made of cast terrazzo, creating a welcoming first impression. Similarly, the main lobby lounge is adorned with furnishings handpicked by Oberson from flea markets across Israel, the Netherlands, and Turkey, further emphasizing the hotel's eclectic and curated aesthetic. The powder room foyer also features cast terrazzo flooring and vintage sconces, reinforcing the blend of old and new design elements. The Publica Isrotel, through Dana Oberson Architects' vision, successfully crafts a hotel experience that is both contemporary and deeply rooted in a rich, diverse design language.
