This L.A. Apartment Is a Vintage Wonderland of Circus Stripes and Chrome, Plus Three Bunnies
Zilah Drahn, owner of the East Hollywood plant design studio Plants and Spaces, found her Spanish Colonial apartment through a serendipitous encounter with the garden's caretaker. The apartment complex is surrounded by 1930s gardens, and Drahn's unit, previously unlisted, offered the outdoor space she desired. Within a few months, Drahn transformed the apartment into a personalized living space, incorporating vintage finds from various sources including Facebook Marketplace, L.A. vintage stores, her travels, and past clients.
The apartment showcases a playful aesthetic, blending cow-print chaises, chrome dining chairs, Murano glassware, and an array of animal motifs, complemented by the presence of three free-roaming bunnies. This eclectic mix contributes to a lived-in and welcoming atmosphere that has made the apartment a popular gathering spot for friends. Drahn emphasizes the importance of creating a cozy and inviting environment, especially in the living room, which she designed to be the primary hosting area. The living room features original elements like a fireplace and tiles, reflecting the building's nearly 100-year history.
Vintage Chinese pieces, such as an octagonal dark bamboo table and a jade piece from China, along with a matchbook dish inherited from a family friend, add unique character to the space. The apartment's 'Zilah’s Zoo' nickname stems from its abundant animal motifs, including a zebra-print rug, cow-print chaise, and striped living room curtains, which evoke a whimsical circus-like ambiance. Drahn's affinity for 1980s design is evident in pieces like the chrome and glass dining table, which uses reflective qualities to enhance the sense of space.
The bathroom, with its original yellow and purple tiles, was initially a design challenge. Drahn customized the space by color-matching light purple fabric for a shower curtain and painting the walls to create a chic and cohesive look. The kitchen, while originally white, has been warmed up with personal touches like ground-level pictures and wall paintings, and a butter yellow paint that perfectly matched a Backdrop paint color, complementing the existing black elements.
Drahn expresses a deep appreciation for the history embedded within her apartment, pondering the stories of past inhabitants and the events that unfolded within its walls, such as dinners by candlelight. The apartment also features a cabinet acquired through antiquing, topped with a custom-designed planter inspired by a 1970s bubble lamp, a collaboration with Muhly. Her bedroom includes a cherished 1973 headboard with a matching dresser, a heavy piece with brass and burl tones, acquired during a sourcing trip to Palm Springs. An antique ceramic planter from the '70s, which houses a plant, was strategically placed on a pedestal after one of her rabbits, Ghosty, ate part of the tree, demonstrating a creative solution to pet-proofing and elevating decor.
