9 Ways to Make Your Mudroom Beautiful and Functional, From a Designer

This blog post explores how to design a mudroom that is both beautiful and functional, drawing insights from certified kitchen and bath interior designer Courtney Zanelli. The article emphasizes that good design prioritizes functionality, and mudrooms, as high-traffic, utilitarian spaces, are no exception. Challenges often arise from cramped spaces, making efficient organization crucial. Zanelli's primary advice is to ensure every item has a designated place to maintain order. Before embarking on a mudroom design, Zanelli suggests taking an inventory of needs and wants. This involves considering daily routines, identifying organizational pain points, determining what needs to be stored, and envisioning how the space can enhance day-to-day life. This thoughtful approach helps create a truly custom and effective mudroom. The article then provides nine specific design tips for small mudrooms: 1. **Consider Height and Ease-of-Use:** Design for accessibility, placing hooks and shelving within easy reach to encourage regular use by all household members. 2. **Use Large Hooks:** Essential for holding jackets, coats, and backpacks currently in rotation, even in compact areas. 3. **Add a Closet:** If space permits, a closet is ideal for storing out-of-season outerwear or dressier coats not used daily. This can be either a freestanding or built-in unit. 4. **Befriend a Bench:** A mudroom essential, a sturdy bench provides a place to sit while putting on or taking off shoes. Opt for one with open space underneath to tuck away footwear. 5. **Get Tough on Flooring:** Given the heavy wear and tear, mudroom flooring must be highly durable to withstand mud, water, and foot traffic. 6. **Corral Clutter:** Utilize tall catchalls, such as vintage stoneware crocks, for items like umbrellas, keeping them organized and accessible. 7. **Go for Cubbies:** Cubbies or open shelving paired with baskets are excellent for neatly storing smaller items like hats, gloves, and pet leashes, reducing visual clutter. 8. **Use Neutral Paint:** Zanelli recommends warm neutral paint colors like Benjamin Moore's Edgecomb Gray or Revere Pewter, which seamlessly integrate with adjacent rooms. For those desiring color, sophisticated blues and greens like Farrow & Ball's Light Blue or French Gray are suggested for their chameleon-like properties under different lighting conditions. 9. **Add a Punch of Color:** Introduce vibrant hues through upholstered bench cushions or pillows with fun prints to elevate the aesthetic of the utilitarian space without compromising functionality. These tips collectively aim to transform a mudroom into an organized, efficient, and visually appealing part of the home, regardless of its size. #MudroomDesign #HomeOrganization #InteriorDesignTips #SmallSpaceSolutions #FunctionalDesign #CourtneyZanelli #DesignTrends #HomeImprovement #MudroomDesign #HomeOrganization #InteriorDesignTips #SmallSpaceSolutions #FunctionalDesign #CourtneyZanelli #DesignTrends #HomeImprovement
