“Toilet with a view”: the bathroom trend quickly gaining in popularity

Open-plan ensuites are emerging as a notable trend in home design, moving away from traditional private bathroom setups towards more integrated, resort-style living spaces. This design choice, which often involves removing doors between the bedroom and bathroom, is driven by a desire for more generous and luxurious-feeling environments, as highlighted by Tim Bennetton, Founder, Architect and Engineer at Tim Bennetton Architects. The core appeal of open-plan bathrooms lies in their ability to create an expansive feel and to leverage advantageous views, such as those overlooking a courtyard or scenic landscape. Bennetton points out that while this trend has been present since at least 2008, it is currently gaining significant traction due to an increased appreciation for luxury and functionality in residential spaces. One of the primary considerations in this trend is the integration of the toilet within an open-plan setting. While some individuals may find an open-plan toilet acceptable, many prefer a greater degree of privacy. To address this, designers can incorporate flexible solutions such as sliding doors, decorative screens, or blinds, which allow the ensuite or toilet area to be separated when desired. Products like Veri Shades, which offer the aesthetic of sheer curtains with the functionality of full closure for privacy and light control, can serve this purpose effectively. This flexibility ensures that homeowners can enjoy the benefits of an open layout while retaining options for seclusion. However, the concept of open-plan bathrooms is not without its critics, particularly from a Feng Shui perspective. Jane Langof, a Feng Shui Master at Feng Shui Concepts, expresses concerns about the energetic implications of integrating a bathroom directly into a bedroom. According to Feng Shui principles, bathrooms are associated with cleansing and the accumulation of negative energy due to their function in waste disposal and cleanliness. Introducing this energy into a bedroom, which is meant for rest, rejuvenation, and health, can be counterproductive. Langof specifically warns that the negative energy from an open-plan bathroom can be depleting and interfere with restorative processes. She also notes that the alignment of a bathroom door with a bed can energetically lead to health issues in corresponding body parts and that a toilet facing a bed might increase the likelihood of promiscuous behavior, potentially affecting relationships within a master bedroom. Despite these concerns, the trend emphasizes maximizing spatial perceptions and enhancing luxury, often by capitalizing on natural light and views. The decision to adopt an open-plan ensuite involves balancing modern aesthetic preferences and perceived luxury with practical considerations of privacy and the energetic impact on living spaces. Designers and homeowners are encouraged to weigh these factors carefully, utilizing adaptable design elements to mitigate potential drawbacks while embracing the desired sense of openness and sophistication. #OpenPlanEnsuite #BathroomTrends #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #LuxuryLiving #FlexibleDesign #FengShui #PrivacySolutions #OpenPlanEnsuite #BathroomTrends #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #LuxuryLiving #FlexibleDesign #FengShui #PrivacySolutions
