Ten calm interiors with natural clay wall finishes that don't need painting
This lookbook showcases ten distinct interiors, including homes, restaurants, and offices, that incorporate natural clay plaster wall finishes. The article emphasizes clay finishes as a healthy, breathable alternative to traditional paints or wallpaper for interior walls and ceilings. These finishes are naturally pigmented, free of toxic ingredients, made from natural materials, do not require painting, and are compostable. Clayworks, a brand manufacturing clay plaster finishes in Cornwall, England, sponsored this lookbook.
The featured projects highlight the versatility and aesthetic appeal of clay plaster. Porteous' Studio in Edinburgh, an apartment converted from a former blacksmith's workshop by Izat Arundell, uses clay-based plaster to achieve a calm tone, complemented by a simple palette of stone and wood for a natural feel. Birch and Clay Refugio in London, a renovated and extended flat by Rise Design Studio, prominently features clay finishes in various shades, from light grey in the kitchen to a light grey-green in the master bedroom and a pastel pink in the children's bedroom.
Commercial spaces also benefit from clay finishes, as seen in Sticks n Sushi, a London restaurant designed by Norm Architects. Here, light clay finishes define the larger dining areas, while darker tones create intimacy in private dining spaces. The Devon Passivhaus by McLean Quinlan uses clay plaster walls in combination with rough sawn oak flooring and charred wood cabinetry to create a serene environment within its low-rise structure, which also features an art-filled hidden courtyard.
Norm Architects again utilized natural materials, including a light, smooth clay plaster, as a backdrop for the Dulong jewellery showroom in Copenhagen, drawing inspiration from modernist artists' studios. The Barbican apartment in London, designed by Takero Shimazaki Architects, blends Japanese architectural aesthetics with the Barbican's brutalist concrete structure, incorporating clay-finished walls, tatami mats, and various timber elements. Hoof cafe in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, by Bone, uses rustic clay plaster to evoke the feel of horse stalls, contrasting it with blocky hand-brushed steel counters.
For residential projects focusing on health and sustainability, House of Grey's Highgate home in London features natural clay wall finishes alongside custom timber furniture and coconut husk fiber-upholstered beds. Leaf House in south London, a loft extension by Szczepaniak Astridge, prioritizes a peaceful retreat and sustainability, with clay covering its roof and walls, inspired by Japanese interior design. Finally, Clay House in London by Simon Astridge, an apartment renovation, uses layers of coarse clay to create an unfinished look for walls and ceilings in the open-plan living space and a calm atmosphere in the bedroom, further emphasizing the material's aesthetic and environmental benefits.
