Skip The Accent Wall & Try An Erin Napier-Inspired Alternative To Elevate Your Home Instead

Accent walls, commonly created with paint, wallpaper, paneling, or texture, serve to establish an immediate focal point within a room. However, many accent wall applications are not renter-friendly, and certain aesthetics, such as a single brightly colored wall, are becoming dated. Accent walls share a similar function with feature walls, in that both draw attention to a prominent element within a space. Erin Napier, co-host of HGTV's "Home Town," offers an alternative to these outdated accent walls through the use of a large, visually striking feature. In a specific episode titled "Making the Nest" (Season 9, Episode 8), Napier demonstrates this approach by utilizing a substantial piece of art as the focal point in a client's living room. This strategy was particularly effective in a small living room where extensive wall filling was not necessary. The vertically oriented artwork successfully anchored the space, especially when flanked by windows on either side. Napier acknowledges that large-scale art can be prohibitively expensive. To address this, she showcased a method for creating significant artwork from repurposed materials. She transformed a discarded board, originally intended to cover a hole in a hardwood floor, into a whimsical modern art piece. This approach was inspired by her alma mater, Ole Miss, where students were encouraged to utilize available resources for art creation. The board's considerable size and the intrinsic patterns formed by dried glue made it an ideal foundation for a unique artistic statement. For individuals seeking to replicate this concept, tips for selecting and installing oversized artwork are provided. The process of choosing appropriate artwork, especially within budgetary constraints, can be challenging. Crafting one's own large-scale art offers a cost-effective solution, allowing for customization in terms of size, orientation, and color scheme to perfectly complement a given space. Blank canvases, such as the Kate and Laurel 18x40-inch option, are available pre-framed and can be painted. Another creative option involves personalizing existing thrift store art through painting. For those who prefer to purchase art rather than create it, various retailers including World Market, Wayfair, Home Goods, At Home, and Amazon offer oversized artwork priced under $200. The vgrozirh framed modern art canvas, for instance, is presented as an affordable option available in multiple sizes. It is noted that framing costs can sometimes exceed the art itself; however, large-scale art does not always require a frame. Furthermore, rather than hanging, substantial art pieces can be leaned against a wall, a practical solution for heavy items, as demonstrated by Napier's nearly ceiling-high artwork. For hanging heavy pieces, it is recommended to secure them to studs and use appropriate drywall anchors for items over 20 pounds. The effectiveness of oversized art as a focal point may vary depending on the specific room. While Erin Napier, with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, frequently employs art in her designs, the oversized aesthetic may not suit every space. A general guideline suggests reserving large-scale pieces for expansive rooms and smaller pieces for more confined areas. However, when a single large artwork is intended as a focal point, minimizing surrounding wall space can maximize its impact. Smaller rooms can therefore benefit significantly from a singular art piece. Optimal locations for oversized art include hallway ends, niches or nooks, or horizontally above a sofa or bed. It can also serve as a central feature in rooms lacking a fireplace. In spaces with extensive wall areas or numerous architectural details, a single large artwork might either appear insufficient or overpowering. In such cases, a gallery wall could be a more suitable alternative. Napier's design philosophy emphasizes adapting art integration to the unique characteristics of each client's home, ensuring a balanced and harmonious aesthetic. #ErinNapier #HomeTown #AccentWallAlternative #OversizedArt #HomeDesign #DIYHomeDecor #InteriorDesign #FocalPoint #ArtisticExpression #ErinNapier #HomeTown #AccentWallAlternative #OversizedArt #HomeDesign #DIYHomeDecor #InteriorDesign #FocalPoint #ArtisticExpression
