How HGTV's Leanne Ford DIYed the Chicest Kitchen Backsplash
The renowned designer Leanne Ford, known for her layered, monochromatic aesthetic, approached the backsplash in her latest renovation project—a Sears Craftsman house in Pittsburgh—with an experimental DIY method. Instead of traditional installation, Ford aimed to whitewash plain ceramic tiles to achieve a unique, textured look. She sourced dark gray cement tiles from Clé and enlisted Pittsburgh-based ceramicist Philip Soucy for assistance. Together, they hand-painted the tile fronts with white glaze, deliberately embracing imperfections for a distinct, artisanal finish.
During the kiln firing process, an unexpected chemical reaction occurred. The gray tiles, when baked, reverted to a terra cotta color, introducing warm, earthy tones that were not initially planned. This serendipitous outcome, however, proved to be a pivotal design element for the entire kitchen. Ford embraced this 'happy accident,' allowing the newfound warm hues of the backsplash to inspire the broader design scheme of the room. She complemented these orangey tones with metallic accents, specifically incorporating brass and copper elements throughout the kitchen space.
This creative improvisation not only resulted in a chic and personalized kitchen backsplash but also demonstrated how unforeseen elements can significantly influence and elevate a design project. The unique, handcrafted backsplash now stands as a distinctive personal touch from Ford for the future owner of the renovated home, setting the aesthetic direction for the kitchen's overall ambiance. The article highlights how embracing spontaneity and collaboration can lead to innovative and beautiful design solutions, turning an accidental color shift into a central feature of the home's design.
