digital technology & traditional craftsmanship merge in 'candelera' lighting fixture series
The 'Candelera' lighting fixture series, designed by industrial designer Federico Stefanovich, represents a fusion of digital manufacturing processes and traditional craftsmanship, resulting in large-format sculptural lighting solutions. These fixtures are developed with a functional approach, meticulously balancing parameters such as volume, mass, and density, along with the spacing between elements, to create harmonious compositions. The design process leverages parametric modeling software to precisely calculate and project the shaping of each piece, ensuring that these complex calculations for balance are accurately translated into the final product.
The manufacturing involves transforming 2D surfaces into intricate double-curved forms through simple geometrical gestures. These forms are then assembled to discreetly conceal the light source, maintaining a raw and minimalistic aesthetic that evokes organic shapes and structures. While digital tools like laser cutting ensure precision in the initial cutting of numerous sheet metal sections, the subsequent building and joining of these components require skilled handcrafted metalworking techniques. This blend of high-tech and traditional methods ensures both the accuracy of the design and a distinctive, meticulously constructed feel in the finished pieces.
Stefanovich's intention was to create large-scale formats that serve not only as sculptural art but also as effective light sources to complement various interior spaces. The collection is designed to meet a wide range of interior design needs, offering pieces that are not only visually compelling but also functionally robust. The designer emphasizes that for a system to be in complete balance, there is no compromise; it either is or isn't. This principle underpins the conceptualization of each sculptural composition from a functionality perspective.
The 'Candelera' collection explores various material, finish, shape, and proportion possibilities while maintaining a consistent abstract language and raw aesthetic. The resulting products are presented as sophisticated works of art, characterized by their balance, engineering precision, and timeless appeal. These lighting fixtures, often placed in common living and working areas, carry a symbolism of community, support, and warmth. The rotational movement incorporated into some pieces adds dynamism, aiming to transcend the static nature of typical luminous objects.
Beyond aesthetics and functionality, the project also considers the emotional connection between humans and objects. Stefanovich strives for long-lasting appreciation and use by creating designs that are timeless, feature high-quality craftsmanship, and resonate emotionally with their users. By producing handcrafted, locally made products, the project also supports a sustainable perspective, contributing to economic growth and fostering artistic sensibility within local communities and talented workshops. The 'Candelera' collection serves as a bridge, connecting an international market that values fine craftsmanship and artisanal processes with local expertise, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of artistic skill.
