Starry Night: Outdoor Wall Light Installation
This article highlights an innovative outdoor lighting installation that transforms a garage door in a recently renovated Toronto house into a celestial display. The project, conceived by LGA Architectural Partners, focuses on integrating the home's exterior with its natural surroundings. Principal Janna Levitt collaborated with landscape architect Scott Torrance to design a series of garden rooms, emphasizing the outdoor living experience for the residents.
The central feature of this design is a perforated pattern on the garage door, depicting the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpio. Levitt meticulously laser-cut this astral pattern into panels made of Eternit fiber-cement board. Behind these panels, LED lights were installed within a four-inch-deep cavity, creating a glowing effect that mimics the night sky.
The inspiration for this unique installation draws from architectural history, specifically referencing Le Corbusier's depiction of Orion at the Saint-Pierre de Firminy church in France. This architectural nod elevates the functional garage door into a piece of art that invites cosmic contemplation. For the family living in the house, the illuminated constellations offer a moment of reflection on the mysteries of the universe as they relax in their garden, which is thoughtfully planted with native species. This creative solution not only provides ambient lighting but also adds a distinctive and meaningful aesthetic element to the home's exterior, blending modern design with a sense of wonder and connection to the cosmos.
