James Turrell’s Colorado installation is a portal to the sky
The Green Mountain Falls Skyspace, an art installation by James Turrell, is situated in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, specifically in the foothills of Pikes Peak. This particular Skyspace is one of over 80 such installations created by Turrell globally, all designed to facilitate a unique interaction between visitors and the sky through controlled environments. The structure itself is an unpretentious stone building, subtly integrated into its natural surroundings, emphasizing the artistic experience within.
The core of the Green Mountain Falls Skyspace is a single chamber featuring a rectangular skylight. A key element of Turrell's work, light is manipulated through colour-changing LEDs that frame the aperture, altering the perception of the sky and creating a dynamic visual experience. Unlike many of his other Skyspaces, this installation incorporates an innovative feature: the aperture can be opened when weather conditions permit, enhancing the direct connection to the natural environment. This design choice allows for a more immersive and unmediated view of the sky, differentiating it from his enclosed skyspaces.
The interior of the chamber further augments the experience. A polished granite floor reflects the sky above, effectively extending the visual field and deepening the sense of immersion. This reflective surface blurs the lines between the interior and the exterior, making the sky an integral part of the architectural space. The chamber is designed to accommodate up to 25 visitors, providing a communal yet contemplative space. For comfort, heated concrete benches are installed, allowing visitors to relax and fully engage with the celestial display regardless of external temperatures. The combination of architectural design, light manipulation, and strategic use of materials aims to create a profound and meditative encounter with the sky.
The Green Mountain Falls Skyspace is a significant addition to James Turrell's ongoing body of work, continuing his exploration of light and space. His Skyspaces are renowned for their ability to heighten perception and draw attention to the subtle nuances of natural light and atmospheric changes. By providing a carefully framed and controlled viewing experience, Turrell encourages observers to reconsider their relationship with the natural world and the sky above. The installation serves as both an artwork and an observatory, inviting reflection and a renewed appreciation for environmental phenomena, particularly the changing light and colors of the sky. This piece of land art exemplifies Turrell's consistent artistic vision across his numerous Skyspace projects worldwide.
