I dig this floating LED accent lighting, but wow, it's a pain to install
The Govee Skyline Kit introduces a unique approach to smart lighting by suspending an LED strip light in mid-air using a flattened steel wire stretched between two opposing walls. This innovative design aims to create a refined aesthetic element that projects accent lighting into various spaces, such as dark corners, ceilings, or from beneath alcoves. The underlying lighting technology consists of RGBWWIC LEDs with a maximum power draw of 36 watts, divided into eight addressable zones, each containing six lamps. This setup allows for vibrant color display and dynamic lighting effects, controlled primarily through the Govee app.
The installation process for the Govee Skyline Kit is described as challenging and time-consuming, requiring a comfort level with basic home improvement tasks, including drilling eight holes into walls and working on a ladder. Key steps involve mounting two bases on opposite walls, unspooling and flattening the 4-meter steel wire, and carefully adhering the LED strip to it, maintaining a precise 7.5 cm gap at one end. The wire is then tightened using 'fixing bars,' a process that can be difficult to execute to achieve optimal tension. The reviewer encountered issues with the wall anchors provided, suggesting the use of higher-quality alternatives for better security and aesthetics. Additionally, finding an appropriate location for installation proved difficult due to the kit's fixed lengths (4 or 6 meters) and the requirement for a power outlet within reach of its 13-foot power cord. The strip can be cut shorter, but extending it is not possible.
Once installed, the Govee Skyline Kit delivers impressive and aesthetically pleasing backlighting with vibrant colors and bright whites. The Govee app, which automatically detects the device as a standard strip light, offers extensive control over the lighting, including dozens of scene options, adjustable white color temperatures (2700K to 6500K), and music synchronization via a built-in microphone or the phone's mic. An AI assistant within the app allows for custom scene creation from verbal prompts, typed commands, or even photographs. However, these app features are consistent with Govee’s standard strip lights and do not offer unique functionalities specifically for the Skyline Kit.
A significant issue encountered during testing was the calibration of the light strip's length within the app. Despite following instructions, recalibrating the length did not accurately reflect the physical cuts made to the strip, leading to unlit segments. A workaround involved intentionally misrepresenting the strip's length in the app to ensure all LEDs functioned correctly, suggesting a firmware bug that may be resolved in future updates. Aesthetically, the bulky mounting brackets and the visible power cord detract from the otherwise sleek lighting effect. The reviewer recommends considering the Govee Skyline Kit as a unique accent piece if its hardware can be discreetly integrated into the environment. The product's retail prices are $120 for the 4-meter version and $150 for the 6-meter version, with an updated note specifying the power cord length.
