Drybar Founder Alli Webb on Scaling a $200+ Million Business without a College Degree

Alli Webb, the founder of Drybar, shares her journey from a stay-at-home mother to a successful entrepreneur who sold her company for over $200 million, all without a college degree or formal business training. Her entrepreneurial path began with a mobile hair business in Los Angeles, offering $40 blowouts to mothers, a service that was not widely available at the time. This mobile service quickly evolved into her first brick-and-mortar salon, Drybar. Webb reflects on her childhood in Boca Raton, highlighting how growing up with parents who owned a small business, called Flips, inadvertently provided her with foundational lessons in entrepreneurship. She observed her parents building and growing their business, which instilled in her an understanding of customer service and how to treat people—skills she later realized were invaluable, even though she didn't initially aspire to be an entrepreneur. This upbringing provided a strong, albeit unrecognized at the time, foundation for her future ventures. The article delves into the intense experience of building and scaling Drybar, noting the intoxicating feeling of growth alongside the significant mental cost it incurred. Webb openly discusses personal challenges, including her divorce, her son's struggles with addiction leading to a visit to rehab, and her own experience with burnout. These difficult life events prompted a period of deep self-reflection and personal growth, leading to a 'softer version' of herself and fostering greater self-awareness. This journey of introspection ultimately inspired her to write the book, “The Messy Truth.” Webb also touches upon the intimidation she felt during the fundraising process and when curating the Drybar board. Despite these challenges, she navigated them successfully, underscoring her resilience and business acumen. A significant theme discussed is her past obsession with perfection, which she admits was detrimental to her mental health. She recounts her conviction that any small flaw in one store could lead to the collapse of the entire business. While acknowledging the importance of addressing problems, she now understands that this extreme pursuit of perfection caused undue stress and a misguided perception of passion, sometimes leading her to be overly critical in her quest for an ideal customer experience. Her goal was always to ensure a consistent, excellent experience at every Drybar location, a challenging endeavor given the variability of individual hairstylists. #AlliWebb #Drybar #Entrepreneurship #BusinessScaling #StartupJourney #PersonalGrowth #PodcastInterview #WomenInBusiness #AlliWebb #Drybar #Entrepreneurship #BusinessScaling #StartupJourney #PersonalGrowth #PodcastInterview #WomenInBusiness
