Pro tips for freshening up your vanity | Produced by Seattle Times Marketing

The bathroom vanity is a central element in personal care routines, influencing both the functionality and aesthetics of the bathroom space. This guide provides comprehensive advice on how to refresh and renovate a bathroom vanity, catering to various levels of intervention, from simple cosmetic updates to a complete removal and replacement. The article incorporates insights from Seattle-based experts, including interior designer Vince Stroop of Stroop Design and contractor Amir Bahandari of PNW Design and Remodel. For those not looking to undertake a full replacement, several strategies are offered to update an existing vanity. A fresh coat of paint or stain can significantly alter the vanity's appearance. Vince Stroop suggests using neutral tones for a timeless look or bold colors for a statement, emphasizing the importance of water-resistant paint and sealer for durability and ease of cleaning. Another simple yet effective update is replacing drawer pulls and knobs with modern or vintage alternatives. If the countertop is outdated, replacing it with solid natural stone slabs is recommended, as these are easier to clean and maintain compared to small format tiles and grout. Stroop advises using simple, monochromatic looks for small bathrooms to create an illusion of space, while larger rooms can accommodate more patterns depending on the overall design theme. The edge detail of the countertop also offers an opportunity for character, with square-eased or knife edges for a modern look and soft crescent or ogee edges for a classic feel. Undermounting the sink is consistently recommended for a cleaner finish. Beyond the vanity itself, updating hardware like faucets can modernize the entire area. Stroop suggests choosing a faucet finish that complements other hardware in the bathroom. Mirrors can also be updated by replacing them or adding a frame; oversized mirrors can create the perception of a larger space, though placement should consider the sink's splash-zone to prevent watermarking. Improved lighting, such as sconces or side lights in addition to over-mirror lighting, can enhance both style and functionality, providing more flattering illumination. Adding or changing a backsplash, whether with interesting tiles, marble, or peel-and-stick options, is a more impactful project that can be relatively easy to install. For a complete renovation involving the removal and installation of a new vanity, contractor Amir Bahandari outlines a detailed step-by-step process. Before starting, essential tools like an adjustable wrench, utility knife, screwdriver, pry bar, caulk, level, measuring tape, silicone sealant, and plumber’s tape should be gathered, along with the new vanity and faucet. The process begins with turning off the water supply, either at the sink's shut-off valves or the main house supply if necessary, and then draining residual water by opening the faucet. Disconnecting the hot and cold water lines from the faucet using an adjustable wrench and placing a bucket underneath is the next step. The drain trap (P-trap) is then loosened and removed. If a mirror is in the way, it should be carefully removed. The old vanity top, if secured with caulk, is then loosened by cutting through the caulking with a utility knife and gently prying it up. Finally, the vanity is detached from the wall by removing screws and prying it away if it's stuck due to caulk. Installing the new vanity involves preparing the area by cleaning away old caulk and adhesive. If necessary, the new vanity is assembled according to manufacturer instructions. The vanity is then positioned against the wall, leveled using shims if needed, and secured to wall studs with screws for stability. A bead of silicone caulk is applied to the top edges of the vanity base before setting the new vanity top in place and pressing it down. The faucet is installed according to its instructions, and water supply lines are reconnected to both the faucet and shut-off valves, using plumber's tape for a good seal. The drain pipe is also reconnected and secured. A thin bead of silicone caulk is applied where the vanity top meets the wall to prevent water seepage. The final steps include turning the water supply back on, checking for leaks, testing the faucet and drain, reinstalling the mirror if it was removed, and cleaning up the work area. This comprehensive approach, though taking a few hours depending on experience, can effectively transform a bathroom. #BathroomRenovation #VanityUpdate #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #DIYRenovation #BathroomDesign #HomeDecor #Plumbing #ConstructionTips #BathroomRenovation #VanityUpdate #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #DIYRenovation #BathroomDesign #HomeDecor #Plumbing #ConstructionTips
