After a Decade of Millennial Gray, This Living Room Looks Like New in Warm Neutrals
Interior designer and content creator Kellie Brown recently undertook a significant living room makeover for her sister in Philadelphia. The sister had lived in her home for over a decade and had not updated her living room since initially decorating it. The primary challenge was the prevalent "millennial gray" color scheme, which Brown identified as outdated and cold. Brown approached the redesign by subtly introducing the idea of a warmer palette to her sister, who typically preferred neutrals and avoided patterns. To address this, Brown presented examples that demonstrated how warming up the space would look and feel, aiming to create a room that reflected her sister's current style without alienating her established preferences.
The transformation began with a shift in the color palette. Brown selected a wallpaper featuring a beige backdrop with black-and-white organic shapes, a choice that balanced her sister's preference for neutrals with a subtle visual interest. After painting the room in Valspar's Swiss Coffee, a warm white, the wallpaper was installed on the living room's most prominent wall through a collaborative DIY effort. This step was crucial in moving away from the previous cool-toned aesthetic and establishing a warmer, more inviting atmosphere.
Inspired by their shared love for travel, Brown and her sister envisioned the revamped living room as a semi-formal space reminiscent of a boutique hotel lobby. The goal was not a cozy TV-watching area but rather an elegant space suitable for lounging and entertaining guests. Given the room's location off the front door, up a short flight of stairs, specific furniture choices were made to enhance both safety and aesthetics. An AllModern tête-à-tête chaise was placed along the edge near the stairs, providing seating and acting as a visual barrier without obstructing sightlines. This piece was paired with a wider sofa on the main wall, with both pieces featuring requested curved designs to add depth and encourage conversation.
To control natural light and enhance the room's luxurious feel, linen curtains from Twopages were installed floor-to-ceiling across the windowed wall. These curtains effectively concealed the irregular window heights while still allowing ample sunlight. A significant upgrade was the addition of a tufted Wayfair rug, which initially faced resistance from Brown's sister due to a past aversion to rugs. However, its immediate impact on making the room feel cozier and better defining the furniture quickly won her over, demonstrating the transformative power of textiles in a space.
A key element of the redesign was the acquisition of a round coffee table found on Facebook Marketplace. This secondhand find, originally a high-value item listed at a fraction of its price, served as a central link between the two main seating areas. Brown used this opportunity to educate her sister on the benefits of timely decision-making in secondhand shopping. The project concluded with the hanging of childhood art by the front door, adding a personal touch. The collaboration between the sisters, though challenging at times, resulted in a successful living room renovation that brought warmth, style, and a sophisticated ambiance to the home.
