8 Tricks to Make Your Small Bathroom Look Bigger, According to Designers

This article explores various design strategies to create the illusion of a larger bathroom, even without undertaking extensive physical renovations. The advice is provided by interior designers Shannon Askinasi of Ash and Pine Interiors and James Pearse Connelly of JPConnelly.com. Key recommendations include replacing opaque shower curtains with glass doors, which visually extends the space by allowing an unobstructed view. If a full glass door installation is not feasible, a transparent shower curtain can offer a similar, albeit less impactful, visual expansion. Maximizing light reflection is another crucial technique. This involves incorporating large mirrors to bounce light around the room, significantly brightening and opening up the space. Additionally, selecting chrome hardware for fixtures can contribute to this effect, as its reflective surface helps light dance within the room. The article emphasizes the importance of a monochromatic color scheme, suggesting that either very dark or very light palettes can create a sense of spaciousness. Examples provided include all-white, all-black, deep navy blues, dark burgundies, ivories, and creams, which offer sophisticated and expansive aesthetics. Regarding sinks, the designers advise opting for minimalist options. Floating vanities, which allow the floor to be seen underneath, and pedestal sinks are recommended for their space-saving qualities. It is also highlighted that the sink's size should be proportional to the room to maintain a sense of balance and avoid overwhelming the small space. Patterned wallpaper, specifically vertical stripes, chevrons, or large repeating patterns with ample negative space, can also be strategically used to make a small bathroom appear larger, despite being a contrasting approach to monochromatic designs. Incorporating bold design elements is encouraged to create visual interest and draw the eye around the room, diverting attention from the room's actual size. This can include fluted vanities, accent walls, or interesting lighting fixtures like glass pendants or sconces, which add depth and reflect light. Maintaining consistent finishes across all surfaces, such as extending floor tiles up the walls, painting ceilings the same color as walls, or bringing countertop stone behind mirrors, helps create a seamless and cohesive look, preventing the eye from being drawn to distinct boundaries that might emphasize the room's small scale. Finally, keeping the bathroom clutter-free is paramount. While essential items like soap dispensers are necessary, excessive decorative elements or skincare products should be stored away. Similarly, practical but visually unappealing items like plungers and toilet brushes should be kept out of sight to maintain a clean, organized, and consequently, more spacious appearance. #SmallBathroomDesign #InteriorDesignTips #SpaceSavingIdeas #BathroomDecor #HomeImprovement #MonochromaticScheme #LightReflection #ClutterFree #SmallBathroomDesign #InteriorDesignTips #SpaceSavingIdeas #BathroomDecor #HomeImprovement #MonochromaticScheme #LightReflection #ClutterFree
