Try This 5-Minute Hack to Disguise Your TV
Televisions often present a design dilemma in living rooms, as their placement typically dictates furniture arrangements, yet they rarely contribute positively to a room's aesthetic. Rather than serving as a focal point, many homeowners prefer to integrate or conceal their televisions, allowing more intentional design elements like gallery walls or bookshelves to take center stage. While existing methods for disguising televisions within gallery walls or media consoles exist, a creative DIY solution offers an effective way to completely hide a TV when not in use.
This innovative hack is credited to Kristin Guy, an LA-based creative director, stylist, and photographer, who showcased a remarkable before-and-after transformation of her fireplace mantel on Instagram. The project is surprisingly straightforward, requiring only a rug, a wooden dowel, and a pair of sturdy hooks. This simple DIY can significantly alter the look of a space and can be completed within a weekend.
Guy's motivation stemmed from her dislike of visible televisions, especially when the only viable location in her new home was above the fireplace. She sought a tasteful way to conceal the "black box" to prevent it from dominating the room's design. While Guy enhanced her project by painting the fireplace backdrop and adding a faux mantel for a styled vignette, these steps are optional and can be omitted for those with limited time or budget.
The adaptability of this DIY is a key benefit. Homeowners can select rugs with various styles, from bold graphics to soft and minimalist designs, sourcing them from retailers like Aelfie, Shoppe Amber Interiors, West Elm, and Etsy. The hanging hardware is also customizable, allowing for brass, matte black, or even a decorative curtain rod in place of a wooden dowel, which can also be stained to match any decor.
Guy provided a step-by-step guide for this project. The essential materials include a 4x6-foot flat-weave rug, chosen based on the television's width, two sturdy brass hooks with wall-mounting hardware, and one wooden dowel at least one inch in diameter. The process involves cutting the wooden dowel to extend eight to ten inches beyond each side of the television screen (e.g., a 67-inch dowel for a 48-inch monitor). Next, the brass hooks or hanging hardware are attached approximately six inches away from and two to three inches above the television monitor. Finally, the flat-weave rug is folded over the wooden dowel and hung, creating a lightweight wall hanging that stylishly conceals the television. This DIY offers an elegant and practical solution for maintaining a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing living space while still accommodating modern entertainment needs.
