This new lighting trend is my favorite way to make awkward corners seem luxe – no matter your budget
Empty or awkward corners within a home often present a design challenge, prompting homeowners and designers to seek creative solutions for these spaces. One emerging lighting trend offers a sophisticated and impactful way to utilize these areas, transforming them into focal points that enhance a room's aesthetic. This trend centers on the strategic placement of sculptural light features, specifically long-hanging paper lanterns, which serve both functional and decorative purposes.
Traditionally, lighting primarily fulfills practical needs, but contemporary design increasingly treats light fixtures as artistic elements. Recent lighting trends emphasize sculptural forms, diverse materials, and innovative color applications. Handmade pendant lights, in particular, have gained popularity for their ability to create significant visual impact beyond their utilitarian function. The trend was notably observed in a project by Ome Dezin, where a tall paper lantern was suspended in a bedroom. This fixture seamlessly integrated into the space, appearing custom-designed for the corner it occupied.
The specific light fixture highlighted is the Noguchi Akari light sculpture, designed by American artist Isamu Noguchi. These luminaires are characterized by a weightless luminosity, handcrafted in a workshop in Ozeki, Japan. Their construction involves stretching bamboo rods over wooden forms, then applying cut and fitted washi paper. The enduring popularity of Noguchi Akari lights stems from their beauty, versatility, intricate shapes, and the warm, ambient glow they emit. In the Ome Dezin project, the light's extended length, reaching from ceiling to floor, was intentional. The designers aimed to emphasize the room's high ceilings, drawing the eye upwards while simultaneously providing soft ambient illumination.
Noguchi's lighting designs have experienced a resurgence, aligning with current interior design trends that favor soft, sculptural forms. These fixtures are frequently incorporated by modern interior designers as a source of inspiration. Available in a wide array of shapes and sizes, Akari lights can function as standalone statement pieces or be clustered to achieve a more dynamic and playful aesthetic. Beyond their visual appeal, these ceiling-hung light sculptures offer practical advantages over traditional floor lamps. They occupy similar design territory but are hard-wired into the ceiling, eliminating visible cords and contributing to a cleaner, less cluttered floor space.
While authentic Noguchi Akari light sculptures, still produced by Vitra, range in price from approximately $1,500 to $2,500, making them a significant investment, the aesthetic can be achieved on a more modest budget. Many retailers now offer paper lanterns at lower price points, providing an affordable alternative. This cost-effective approach is particularly beneficial for decorating rooms with high ceilings. The flexibility in shapes and designs of these more accessible paper lanterns encourages experimentation, allowing individuals to select fixtures that resonate with their personal style and bring joy to their living spaces. Examples of more affordable alternatives include the Nelson Cigar Bubble Pendant, Japanese style paper lanterns, and Bijoux paper lanterns, all offering sculptural forms and diverse pricing options.
