These 100-Year-Old Doors Make All Other Room Dividers Pale in Comparison

Anthony D’Argenzio, from Zio and Sons, embarked on a unique renovation project for This Old Hudson Maison, his long-term rental property in upstate New York, by creating a movable wall system using antique doors for the main bedroom. The primary goal was to ensure privacy within the space while also adding an architecturally interesting and space-saving feature. D'Argenzio initially considered using saloon-style doors made from old shutters, but found this too complex and instead opted for a movable wall that would eliminate the need for hinges. The search for suitable doors led him to the Historic Albany Foundation, a nonprofit organization that salvages materials from older properties in the area. There, he discovered a set of over 100-year-old library doors that he deemed perfect for his vision. The entire movable wall system was custom-designed, featuring a tailor-made track and iron hangers from Rustica Hardware. The project, which took several months to complete, faced a mid-course alteration when D'Argenzio realized that three doors were insufficient and returned to source a fourth to achieve the desired aesthetic and functionality. D'Argenzio emphasizes several key considerations for anyone attempting a similar bespoke creation. The first involves carefully evaluating the criteria for the doors, particularly ensuring they fit the opening's height. While doors can be larger than the opening, sufficient space for the track is crucial. He also prioritized the aesthetic, selecting doors with transoms to allow light into the bedroom. The original glass panes were replaced with thicker, textured glass to enhance privacy. Accurate measurement of the trim is another critical step, as the trim must be robust enough to support the significant weight of the movable wall and needs to be flush with the doorframe to prevent gaps. D'Argenzio notes that his project involved considerable trial and error, underscoring the importance of precise measurements from the outset. Privacy considerations are paramount, especially for a bedroom application, where every detail, from glass transoms to potential wall gaps, impacts the room's seclusion. He even devised a custom locking mechanism using shutter locks to secure the doors. Regarding the restoration process, D'Argenzio advises letting the antique doors guide the approach. Options include refinishing, painting, or sanding. He personally favored preserving the patina, opting for a light distressing of the doors. He also provided a practical tip for safety, recommending wearing a mask during any restoration work involving old wood due to unknown fumes. Finally, D'Argenzio focused on styling the completed movable wall. He incorporated an 1840s Federal-style mantel to complement the doors' wood details, along with a mirror and an antique wood storage box to introduce darker vintage tones. The rest of the bedroom's decor, apart from a restored wallpaper, was kept clean and white to maintain a balanced, less rustic aesthetic. #DIY #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #MovableWalls #AntiqueDoors #HistoricPreservation #Upcycling #BedroomDesign #PrivacySolutions #DIY #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #MovableWalls #AntiqueDoors #HistoricPreservation #Upcycling #BedroomDesign #PrivacySolutions
