My hallway was an 80s horror with bright red carpets - now it looks stunning
Betty, known as @at_home_with_betty on Instagram, undertook a comprehensive renovation of her hallway, transforming it from an outdated 1980s aesthetic into a modern, inviting entryway. The original hallway featured bright red carpets, dull grey walls, and an artex ceiling, which she described as an 'eyesore'. The renovation involved a complete overhaul, addressing every surface from floor to ceiling.
The initial steps of the transformation included removing the bright red carpet from both the stairs and the downstairs hallway. This was replaced with lighter wood flooring, specifically Pro-Tex Flooring in the color Woburn Sand. The walls, initially grey, were painted white, and grey paneling was added to introduce textural interest and a contemporary feel. The artex ceiling, a common feature of 80s homes, was skimmed and plastered after the husband scraped off as much of the artex as possible and applied PVA, creating a smooth finish. Additionally, the radiator was relocated, and both the window and door were replaced to update the overall appearance and functionality of the space.
For the stairs, after the red carpet was removed, the outlines were painted a bright white. A cream stair runner was then installed, designed to complement the upstairs twist pile carpet, creating a cohesive look throughout the entryway. Betty noted that she and her husband undertook all the work themselves, from fitting the flooring to painting and plastering, highlighting their DIY approach to home renovation. The panelling used on the hallway walls was sourced from Dulux, in the shade Egyptian Cotton, with paint prices starting from £6 depending on the tub size, indicating a cost-effective approach to material selection.
The project is still ongoing, with future plans including adding a coat rack and extending the wall paneling to the stairs, further enhancing the hallway's updated design. The transformation garnered significant positive feedback from social media followers, who expressed their admiration for the 'glow-up' and the dramatic difference achieved. Comments praised the stunning result, with one user humorously referring to themselves as a 'fellow red carpet survivor'.
The article also provides general tips for budget-friendly home renovations. These include transforming kitchen cupboards using vinyl coverings, changing cabinet and door handles with affordable options from DIY stores or charity shops, utilizing leftover paint for feature walls, and sourcing free items like furniture from platforms such as Facebook Marketplace or Freecycle. These tips emphasize that significant aesthetic improvements can be made without substantial financial investment, mirroring Betty's approach to her hallway renovation.
