Here's How Designers Really Feel About Those Rainbow Bookshelves

The trend of organizing bookshelves by color, popularized by shows like "The Home Edit" and prevalent on platforms like Pinterest, has been a significant shift from traditional categorization methods such as the Dewey Decimal system. While aesthetically appealing, this method can make locating specific books challenging. Designers offer varied perspectives on the longevity and appropriateness of this trend. Cathy Purple Cherry of Purple Cherry Architects notes that color-arranged books emerged approximately 15 years ago and, far from being outdated, the trend has evolved. Initially, its appeal lay in using strong primary colors to organize decor chaos. Currently, the trend has shifted towards more sophisticated palettes, with vendors offering book covers in quiet golds rather than bright reds, indicating a morphing trend likely to persist. Purple Cherry emphasizes the emotional appeal of books, even in a digital age, as they symbolize scholarly pursuits and a passion for reading. Conversely, interior designer Nicole Hirsch views rainbow bookshelves as suitable primarily for children's rooms, suggesting they should not be extended to other areas of a home. She believes the trend originated as an organizational method but gained excessive popularity. Interior designer Amy Pigliacampo, however, supports color-coded organization, arranging everything by ROYGBIV, including her phone apps. She asserts that if this system aids a person's organization, it is effective, but acknowledges it is not for everyone. Robert Rufino, House Beautiful Senior Style Director, finds the rainbow bookshelf trend somewhat uninspired. He suggests more creative alternatives, such as painting the interior of a cabinet to enhance a space's atmosphere, rather than merely color-coding books. Book enthusiasts generally consider color-based arrangements frivolous unless the books are purely decorative, such as those on a coffee table. Using fake books without pages is seen as veering into the realm of tackiness. For those who appreciate rainbow bookshelves, designers offer strategies to refine the look: incorporating diverse elements like sculptures, frames, accessories, and small plants; opting for a monochrome scheme where the bookshelf and books share a single color; utilizing negative space by mixing vertical and stacked books, and displaying attractive covers; and integrating personal items such as heirlooms, board games, and soft-lined objects to create contrast. Another approach is to arrange books emotionally, based on personal significance, as personal libraries often reflect different life chapters. Ultimately, the decision to arrange books by color rests with the individual, prioritizing personal style over strict traditional methods, while still balancing aesthetics with functionality. #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #Bookshelves #ColorOrganization #DesignTrends #BookStorage #HomeLibrary #OrganizingTips #HomeDecor #InteriorDesign #Bookshelves #ColorOrganization #DesignTrends #BookStorage #HomeLibrary #OrganizingTips
