Dan Mazzarini’s breezy blend of gauzy linen, splattered terra cotta and unlacquered brass

Dan Mazzarini, a New York-based designer and creative director of BHDM Design and Archive by Dan Mazzarini, is exploring a bolder color palette in his current home renovation project on the North Fork of New York. Traditionally drawn to warm, creamy neutrals, Mazzarini is now incorporating shades like terra cotta, olive, sage, and sand into his design. His latest mood board, inspired by his Long Island property, showcases a harmonious mix of earthy materials and vibrant hues, aiming for a casual and coastal aesthetic with rich earth tones and organic motifs, embodying an "Americana cottage vibe" that is both easygoing and sophisticated. The design incorporates a variety of textures and patterns, including striped fabrics, patterned wallpaper, and splatterware plates, with an emphasis on textiles suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Key elements in Mazzarini's current design include a woven leather lumbar pillow cover from Arhaus, which adds a timeless texture and an unexpected material choice for a pillow. A vintage mirror contributes a sense of heritage and history to the space, offering a "crusty, dusty" appeal. For lighting, a custom stitch edge coolie pendant light shade from Jack Of All Shades is designed for the dining table, reflecting Mazzarini's preference for whipstitch shades. Textiles play a significant role in introducing color and pattern. The "Shade of Sycamore" fabric in saffron by Katie Leede & Company is a bold botanical print that unifies the home's color scheme. A "Woodard Weave" rug in Cedar Hill from Woodard & Greenstein, with its overscale stripe and multiple colors, provides a fun and unexpected addition to the living room, stepping outside Mazzarini's usual quiet palette. For a guest room, the "Auspicious" wallcovering by Zak+Fox, with its evocative design, was chosen because the material resonated deeply with the designer. Leather is incorporated through Mont Blanc leather in caramel by Moore & Giles, specifically for built-in banquette cushions in the beach house, highlighting a love for saddle leather in any project. Kerry Joyce's "Addison Stripe" fabric, used in both Brick Sand and Peat Sand colorways, brings a vintage yet timeless sophistication, with the earthy Peat Sand complementing neutral palettes. Gauzy striped fabric from Rogers & Goffigon Ltd. is being used for cafe curtains in the kitchen and bathrooms, reviving an old charm. Decorative items include French wine glasses from Crate & Barrel, inspired by Ina Garten, to set a perfect summer table. Vintage pottery from Beall & Bell Antiques adds delightful color and character to rooms and tablescapes. For hardware, unlacquered brass light fixture finishes from HB Lighting are preferred for their warmth and patina. Paints like Benjamin Moore's "Green Grove" are used for contrast doors, creating a non-traditional twist and a striking look when paired with brass hardware. Durability and practicality are considered with materials such as "Sauvignon Oak" extra-wide flooring from Cali Bamboo, selected for its prefinished colors and resilience in homes with pets and guests. Fabric choices for seating include Thibaut's "Arboreta" in charcoal for graphic pillows on a white sofa, and Valley Forge Fabrics Inc.'s "Vineyard Way" indoor/outdoor fabric for living room chairs, chosen for its polyamide composition that withstands wet conditions. A touch of luxury is added with Rose Tarlow Melrose House's "Lugano" velvet in paprika. A classic ticking stripe fabric, "Stirling" in taupe from Threads at Graham Sanderson Interiors, is utilized for concentric square pillow covers. Finally, a vintage ribbed wood lamp adds a warm wood tone to kitchen counters, evoking childhood memories, and custom basket art by Michael McGuire provides primitive yet architectural elements to all his homes, adding unique, found items that bring a personal touch to the overall design. #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #ColorPalette #CoastalDesign #Textiles #Furniture #Lighting #Wallpaper #Flooring #VintageDecor #MaterialSelection #DesignInspiration #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #ColorPalette #CoastalDesign #Textiles #Furniture #Lighting #Wallpaper #Flooring #VintageDecor #MaterialSelection #DesignInspiration
